I recently reinstalled EAW after reading about all the great add-ons. Unfortunately, I've run into a couple of problems.

First as a backgrounder, I'm playing the 1.2 version with the MeatWater sound pack (very impressive!). My system is a P3 733, 128 SDRAM, with a GeForce 256. I have modified the ini file to play the game at 1024x768 and have extrasquadrons set to 3.

Okay, the first problem is that the briefing screen is completely corrupted graphically making it impossible to read the map. Ideas?

The second is that in the article about the add-ons there is a cockpit picture of a Spit with a very wide FOV. I've tried everything I can think of but I can't replicate this view. I've tried all the cockpit function keys and the + and - keys on the keypad to no avail. Ideas?

Many thanks

When i remember ciorrectly
Increased field of view depents on the resolution, it's max in the 800x600 setting and even a little smaller in the 1024x768 mode. Think it was documented somewhere in one of the readme files that came with the patches.

Max Warner,

I'm afraid my knowledge of computers is pretty limited (just what I've picked up here!) so I'm afraid I can't give any help concerning your briefing screen.

...very wide FOV...:
yes, when you increase resolution your field of view will change. The thread where this was discussed is: Screen Res!.

If I recall correctly 1024x768 is the narrowest FoV and the widest are 800x600 and 1600x1200. I personally don't like 1024x768 very much and am now running 1280x1024. This offers a FoV close to the original, but not quite as wide as 800x600. I have a PII 200Mhz (!---it works without any really problematic framerate hit, although I must have Terrain and Ground Object Detail set to Low....if they're set to Medium framerate takes a big hit from just about all altitudes). If you wanted to try it, I don't think you'd have much problem with PIII 733! Actually there was a post on here from somebody running in 1600x1200, stating that this was a terrific resolution and had the widest FoV coupled with tremendous resolution. That would be fun to try on your system (I'm dreaming now............).

Also, Extrasquads shouldn't affect your briefing screens. The only problems that I'm aware of come during the missions themselves. When the problems occur, there seems to be no rhyme or reason as to how: some people have no problem at all, some people complain of crashes with Extrasquads set to numbers higher than 3 (some higher than 2, etc.), some have crashes in Single Missions only, some in Campaigns only, some in both, or any number of combinations of the above..............(for me, it's crashes in Single Missions with Extrasquads at 3 or higher----but my Campaigns are fine with this setting). From what I gather, in general, the faster your system the fewer problems you should have (although like I stated, there seem to be no hard rules for this......................the Readme file for the v1.2 patch isn't kidding when it says this is an unsupported feature not that I'm complaining--Extrasquads is one of the great things that helps set EAW apart from the rest).

(Of course, on the other hand, I guess if you haven't already done so, you could try it with Extrasquads set to 0 and see what happens......)

Max,

The corruption of the map is inherent with GeForce256 cards, Look for my post on the 256 theres some good tips in there.

Thanks guys! I'll give those suggestions a shot. I didn't realize I could increase the res past 1024x768.

CF/Thumper is correct. Man, try 1600 * 1200 & get back to us. Ya gotta try it to believe it. Oh yes, turn off all visual clues & just go by the kite colours & shapes. Of course, use padlocking & no rear view. I use the hat for panning only without snaps.
Thumper, your a man of good tastes who likes a "fair" challenge. If need be, put on a skirt with makeup & hit the streets just long enough to front a G256. I know, I know, morals & all that but we're talking WW2 flight combat on a new dimension here. HadEs, MA even "looks/feels" better. We'll forgive you! Honest!!!!m All in jest my friend. Well, parts of this thread are! Hehe!!!!
FWIW,
Good Hunting!

1600x1200 looks very impressive and is very smooth. Love the expanded FOV. Unfortunately, I don't believe there's any work around re the GeForce 256 and breifing map problem. Thanks again for the help.

IMHO Max, you got a real winner now! I don't know how "old" you are to flight sims but what you got now, all in all, is the best that's come down the chute so far! Congrats!!IMHO!
FWIW,
Good Hunting!
