Hi all,

I am currently reading a book called "night Trap" by Gordon Kent. In one scene an aging S-3B flying an Elint mission from the USS Roosevelt gets attacked by a "Chines A-5 Fantan". Does anyone know what a "Fantan" is?

Cheers

A A-5 Fantan, is designated Q-5 by NATO. It is essentially a MiG-19, with some Chinese engineering. Harmless.

Thanks for the quick reply Supergroove. BTW, in the book the S-3 manages to score a kill by flying below the Fantan's stall speed causing the Fantan to splashdart!

MiG 19 or Q 5 is certainly harmless as for
combat fighters but against such turkey as
S 3 I don't think that Viking's crew get
to much hilarious from such encounter...if
Q 5 were flyed by competent pilot of course.
There was a case in Nam war when Chinese MiG
19 (Shengyang F 6) shot down US NAVY A 6
quite easy with its 3 30 mm guns...

Well, at least the Q-5 in ATF GOLD looked very little like a Mig-19...

"The Nanchang Q-5 'Fantan' is a dedicated attack aircraft loosely based on the airframe of the Chinese-built MiG-19 or J-6.
Development of the aircraft began in August 1958 to meet a People's Liberation Army requirement."

"It would be easy to overstate the relationship of the Q-5 to the MiG-19, the new aircraft actually sharing only the rear fuselage and main undercarriage of the
latter with a new, stretched fuselage, area-ruled to reduce transonic drag."

Ok. If you take the middle picture and sort of replace the nose with a short 'stump'. I can imagine it...
