Damn; we may need a TAW section if this revival keeps up...

Anyway, I ust reinstalled Total Air War and I have a few questions.

First, I downloaded and ran the "TAW Direct3D" patch from CombatSim. It seems to be running fine but I don't know if this is the most current version or not.

Second, I sometimes get a glitch whereby my desktop seems to be a bit scattered after I exit the game. For example, my shortcuts are moved around and the window colors are altered. Has anyone else seen this?

I'm running it on a P3 500, 128 MB, TNT2 Ultra. I'm using DirectX 7 and Detonator 3.68 drivers.

BTW, I forgot how impressive this sim looks. The sky and terrain effects really make you feel like you're "up there," at 20,000+ feet, twisting around in the clouds with other aircraft above and beneath you- very intense.

Just wish it had "snap" views instead of that "panning" cockit view. I find panning is too slow when in battle.

Thanks.

-Good hunting

One thing I found helpful with TAW is to put the keys for padlock threat and front view on my stick. Padlock is cool in TAW because of the transluscent lines of V's on the canopy that point to the HUD -- easy to see where the bandit is with respect to you, and to roll to put the lift vector on him so you can pull him into your HUD. Having front view on the stick allows you to stay oriented and avoid the ground.

Pressing padlock threat a second time gives you an external player-target view that really helps you see the geometry (as Andy Bush says, this is not a cheat, it's a way to visualize the fight the way fighter pilots do with their hands or with airplanes on sticks).

There are other padlock keys that are worth having on your stick or throttle, but padlock threat usually works best for me (I believe it will also padlock an incoming missile if that is the immediate threat).

Is that the problem where all the desktop and window colours are suddenly dark grey after the game refuses to exit? If so, then I have seen this too.

Try deleting the msvcrt.dll from the TAW data directiry- the one in your windows\system WILL be more recent. This ought to fix things.

Hope this helps, Wulf.

PS: I am all for a TAW revival

PPS: F2 padlocks yor current shoot-list no.1 target, and F3 padlocks any immediate threat, e.g. a missile fired against you. Both can be an external view or even a reversed view. I love using the shift-F2 view to watch the enemy aircraft try to spoof my missiles. They do all the right things as well, it's most impressive....

PPPS: There was only one patch released for TAW, but there were 4 versions, one for PCI, one for AGP and 3DFX/D3D versions respectively. Sounds like a modern system would have the AGP-D3D version for latest NVidia based cards.

Hi,

I just re-installed TAW after a long hiatus; been flying F4 and JF18, but miss the incredible terrain, T&L and general feel of flight with TAW. (love those Egyptian artifacts and monuments along the Nile and those 11,000 ft wind-eroded dunes )

I use a Diamond Monster V2 card. Does anyone know what the EnglishGlide patch fixes? Overall, I'm not having a lot of problems. Sometimes, though it takes a couple of reboots to get the thing going and occasionally the Sim will go completely black near the beginning of a mission and I have to hard boot. Has anyone else experienced this and does the Glide patch fix this problem?

Thanks,

Shogun

BTW, I once landed on a road along the Nile, taxied over to this little oasis complete with palm trees and hotel, popped open the canopy, and got my self a cool drink and sat under the shade of a palm tree... No kidding except the part about the drink, of course.

If someone can tell me how to take a screenshot in TAW, I'll forward the image..

What you /need/ is a whole new game.

A lot higher than 800X600 and preferrably with some really awesome (as in platform plus pilot and team-tactics MiG-29+31 or S-37/LFI or Rafale/JAS) enemies and _DRONES_ to help out a very limited F-22 'platinum bullet' force of say 100-175 planes (of which maybe 20 are in-theatre) with visual range supermaneuver.

I just tried to reload mine and got as far as the initial demo movie before lockup. Tried to skip past that and...lockup.

Sigh, KP

I have found that unchecking the Music option during installation typically solves alot of problems getting the game to run.

Hope this helps.
Steve

I'm not sure, but I have a hunch that quite a few of the problems people are experiencing are due to the fact that AYW was a DX5 game, and we are now using DX7a. Otherwise, all NVidia users should delete the file that's named something like Nvidiariva.128 in their TAW directory. This helps things with TNT/TNT2/Geforce users.

The actual patches do not fix anything significant, rather they add a few graphical nicities and correct a few minor glitches.

Cheers, Wulf.
