Is there some trick to getting a Harpoon to make it to a well-defended ship? (Alpha Strike mission, I think)

I have selected "low" flight profile and "skim" approach, but as the Harpoon approaches the ship you can see a missile fire from the deck and scream down on the poor Harpoon!

Is this realistic?

I assume you could saturate the ships defenses with multiple Harpoons, but that's hard to do on your own.

Thanks.

Bring a Prowler to Jam the ship

Bring HARMs to take out there radar

Take ship out with LBGs instead of Harps

Just thoughts...

Program the Harpoons to fly low. it makes them harder to detect and to shoot down.

Unfortunately cf18guru this is very realistic. Real world War At Sea (WAS) is one of the tougher nuts to crack. The Slava and Sovremeny cruisers have multi-layered defenses designed to stop just such attacks. Be thankful that there is no Kirov modeled in this sim!! It is imperative that you take along an area jammer and a flight of HARM shooters loaded to the gills. Have them also load some TALD. It is very probable that Harpoons and Tomahawks are going to be easy pickings for the SA-N-6 (SA-10 Navalized) and the close in gatling guns. You need to saturate the defenses in order to succeed. I have found that if you do this and can get in very low..like below 75' you can get very close, close enough for a skipper or JDAM to reach the target.

What I do is get in to the point where the SAMs start lighting up..then give the division with HARM and tald the "attack air defenses" command then I turn 90 degrees to attack axis and watch. After a few minutes turn in and get on the deck. Try to time it so that your getting close while they are being engaged. This usually works but I often get hit....not until after I have let a few bombs go though

I have not tried it yet..but I may modify a few of theses missions or build a new one that has elements attacking from 360 degrees around the ship. This is how we do it in the real world and makes targeting that much more difficult for the defender.

I'm having the same problem with this mission. The best I could do is kill one Slava and damage the other. I used a pair of Mk-84s on each. Pretty stupid, I know, flying close enough to the fleet to release iron bombs, but poons get shot down every time no matter how many Harms get shot at them.

Yup. I remember playing Harpoon, which was considered a VERY realistic naval/air warfare simulation/wargame in its day. It sometimes took three separate consecutive alpha strike packages from a single CVBG to wear down the defenses of the Soviet Kirov/Slava surface action group enough to start getting hits on the ships - only because at that point their magazines start to run empty of SAMs... Clancy and Larry Bond (the designer of Harpoon) describe this very well in 'Red Storm Rising', albeit with the US CV/Amphib BG defending against a Backfire strike - the Aegis system in all its glory.

Someone should do a Red Storm Rising mission where you find yourself under attack by hundreds of anti-ship missiles fired from the Tu-22s.

In the book, the AEGIS magazines ran out very quickly. They basically ripple fired all their missiles at once and then sat there hoping for the best.

I also wonder if the F-14 fakery could be reproduced somehow (for those not familiar with this great piece of literature, the Russians used old anti-ship missiles fitted with EW devices that made them appear on radar as if it were a large bomber. This led the F-14s away from the main strike package which proceeded to saturate the CVBG defenses with missiles).

Someone could take this further and make a campaign based on the book; this would be exciting to say the least!
