Need help. Wanted to defrag some partitions, and defrag tells me it can't because there are errors on them (seems the HD didn't like the flights around the world this time...) - but I don't trust this scandisk-scrap, because always when it finds something (here on my system) it completely messes up the partition - it takes all files and throws them in large directories - how to avoid this?

Now I am thinking of getting a second harddisk, copy all files over there and reformat the old HD and then use it as backup storage place - but how to transfer all files fast and complete? forgot the DOS command (and this me who likes DOS)...

I've never had trouble with scandisk. But then again, it never seems to find any errors anyway.

Copying from say D drive to C drive;

xcopy D:\*.* C:

Aaarrrggghh no. There may be a switch, or two, involved. Drat, I used to know this stuff too .

Where's that dusty old DOS for Dummies book I had.

I went into start|programs|ms-dos

and then at the C:\Windows prompt I typed.

xcopy/?|more for a list of switches. Hit enter to page down.

Hopefully someone will pop in with a better suggestion for you.

Thanks, Sulla. So the copying thing should be no problem. Hmm, let's wait until tomorrow then. Will do it when I have got me a new HD - I have no backups at all, and don't want to lose any precious data.

It's been awhile so I 'm not 100% sure. Hopefully someone will confirm or refute what I said or come up with a better idea before you do anything.

Ummm....maybe it's also time to think of some sort of backup system. I got scared enough last year to do something. Since I have, or can get, all my programs, I really only needed to save data files (Word files, Excel fils etc) so I decided that a burner would suit my needs. I went and bought a Creative Labs 8x4x32 CDRW.

BTW, if you look at xcopy/?|more, pay attention to the syntax, I think I have it wrong up there.

Hmm, same here - I have no backups at all. That's why I am afraid of doing this scandisk before defragmenting the whole lot.

And as prizes now for harddisks are very low, it's an opportunity to get a 2nd HD...

Decisions, decisions...
