Is this even possible (I don't know) technically?

I've read, as I'm sure you have, a lot of posts lamenting the loss of newbies, and their questions, and this being the reason a lot of the regulars are leaving.

I can come up with a lot of newbie questions to keep things fresh, but eventually even I will begin to remember things, and no longer have to ask.

What with Art Bell retiring this last year, I could not bear the loss of this forum.

I have to agree with her Doug; was thinking the same thing earlier. Perhaps give a trial period so that newbies will be willing to come aboard, get some questions answered and irrevocably get addicted like the rest of us.

On the other hand, if they have to subscribe before they can even get a peek, well, what do you think?

Aww...the most it can cost you is $5.00 for the first month. If it doesn't work for you you can always drop out.

That's not the point, Tailspin. If you just bought, say EAW, and your search engine listed this site as one of the options, then you found out you had to pay to peek-would you? I wouldn't, and if it had been a pay site back in June, I would probably still think that MSFCS1 was a better simulation than EAW because it was prettier. EAW has become my favorite sim solely because of this forum, and because of that, I'll gladly pay the $4/month (if it continues the same way, that is). But someone just discovering EAW, or all the other great flightsims out there and on this board, might not if they have to shell out $ before they know how informative and yes, fun, this place can be.

IMHO, there are a lot of other good places to visit to learn about, and have fun with, flightsims, but this is THE one for EAW, and I would hate to think that someone just coming across it would miss out.

We shall see...

L'il Jugs,

A free preview isn't out of the question sometime down the road.

The technology is certainly there, but I was kinda under the ol' gun to make this site start covering its expenses.

A free preview off the bat might have (would have) left us hanging for too long. I hope you understand this is not greediness, just cold hard necessity.

I really like the preview idea, just give us a month or so to get back on our feet.

Don't mind paying at all Doug, But one very minor grumble; If you'd warned us, we could have got signed up earlier, and I wouldn't have missed my Daily Fix

LJ's point is a good one. I think it will pay you dividends in future.

Well I was sorta inebriated when the whole switchover happened so I didn't miss anything really. Turned on IE and, as this is my "home" page, saw the thingmie to read what to do and did it. No harm no foul. But my lord am I hungover now...

Like everyone's been saying, it was a holiday, people are a little out of it, it'll pick back up to nomal, well as normal as most of us are LOL

Stag,

I understand your point about wanting to have been given some warning about the subscription. Indeed, I believe most of the negative backlash over this business isn't so much about the price (although that's what people are saying it is) as the abruptness of it all.

Here is why it was so sudden. Free hosting wasn't going to help us with our situation so my only options were to shut down the site or go subscriber. I knew, however, that if I announced on the site "I'm sorry everybody, but in 2 weeks we will be shutting down the site or making it a subscriber-only deal" that people would've started to download every page and file from the site as fast as they could --- and they did!

In the short 23 hour period of time I did give notice the site was going nuts with people downloading files and pages. So much so that I could barely gain access to the servers at times.

So again, what seemed like rash, ill-considered behaviour really wasn't. I had limited options and of those none were what I would call "good" ones.
