I was doing some serious surfing after a long layoff, and I was amazed to discover that that my old K-6 system could actually be upgraded again-- to 600 mhz! It seems that due to a particularly strange business decision, AMD has ended up selling a processor called the K-6 III "plus" that is rated at 450mhz but can easily be overclocked to 550 and often to 600. If you have an old super seven system, like I do, you should check this thing out. It provides quite a good upgrade for 50 bucks (American). Do a Deja.com search for "K6 III+" to get more info. One thing I want to point out-- this IS NOT a K6-III 450. The "plus" means it's made with a smaller die, or something-- so it runs cooler and can be overclocked. I'll keep this group posted on my results (I just ordered the thing).

I'm running a K6III 400 (not overclocked). Let me know how you make out. BTW, the best Pricewatch price is $60. Where did you see it for $50?

S! to you.
If you want an easy upgrade, take an K6 III 500/II 500+ (notebook CPU?).
For using an II 500+, you must be able to set 1,8 or 2,0V to the core, so not all mobos can handle it.
Before I´m using an normal II 500, I overclocked an 300 to 350, has been running stable as a rock, but the next grade wouldn´t run.
Set the multiplier to 2, the CPU will intern interpret it as setting to 600mhz!
It should work, like tomshardware.com has tested.
In germany, the CPU isn´t available yet, so I´m unable to get one.
Could one of you tell me, under wich circumstances one could supply me to get one?
Please, mail answer to schaardt@pudenz.com (personal office adress, so not always online)

I was interested in doing just this but ,
From what I read the PROCESSOR is limited to 512 EXTERNAL CACHE so if you have a "Super Socket 7" Motherboard with 2MEG of Cache on it like I do it wont use it

That is my current understanding.
My guess is that no lap top ever uses more than 512 ext cache so no need for a processor to make use of it.

To butcherbird:
visite tomshardware.com or ...de.
The internal 1L cache and 2L cache makes the difference, they are both clocked like the CPU.
Wherefore would you like to have 2 megs 3L cache on mobo?
If you own an K6 II, it has a 1L cache on die and your mobo cache, equal how big, they both will not get that performance of two caches on die and one on mobo.
