This thing tried to kill my machine the other night. I Dl'd patch 1.1 it stopped
in mid load.

I tried DL'd 1.23 it did. Then when I ran the application it said that scenery files were missing.

So I spent the next hour trying to remove the thing through Add/Remove Programs (WIN95)
before it finally conceded and died.

Seems like whenever I hit the Preferences button if I got in the thing, it gave me a Kernel32.DLL error.

BOHICA for me!!!

I don;t know if this will help but I think Ive been where you are now.

One possibility is if you tried to patch 1.1 over version 1.1 some rally bad stuff can happen.
Unfortunately it doesnt know what version you have so it will attempt to patch to 1.1 even if your installed version is 1.1.

I had a miserable time when that happened to me.
Once I realized I already had 1.1 on my CD I was able to sort it out eventually.

If I'm not mistaken the US release already includes all the stuff in the 1.1 patch and as TG said,don't try loading the 1.1 patch if you have the US verson of the game as it tries to overwrite parts of the code and only confuses the installation program.I did the same thing and had pretty much all the problems you described.I don't think they bothered putting any of this in the documentation for the 1.1 Patch either,but I may be mistaken on that.
Do a clean install and patch it with the 1.23 patch only and give it another shot.Once I did that I didn't have a lot of problems with the game and only recall 1 CTD since then.
