Incase anyones thinking about buying MA and read this first, the lowdown is that its a good looking sim at medium to high altitude, but when flying close to the deck it is pretty ugly. Runways are nothing more than a fuzzy colored strip even at high res. Also, flight dynamics are pretty good but landings and take offs are poor. Wouldn't really call this a sim. But if you like jet dogfighting its pretty good. Also wish they had allowed you to padlock enemy which are in your center view, not just closest enemy. Last note...gotta say that the Koreans you hear yelling while flying low in a P51 is a nice touch. Hey, has anyone tried Nations?? Is it as bad as the reviews say it is??

I don't understand where your coming from on unrealistic landings and takeoffs? They are the best take-offs/landings ever, well at least one of the best.

Did you attempt to land with full realism and weather effects? Ever try landing with those wind gusts? It's very difficult to land those jets because you need to slow down quite a bit, and if you misjudge it then you rarely have enough power for a goaround. I think the landings and takeoffs are excellently done, along with the dogfights and groundattacks.

I agree, Lucky. I don't think that you've turned off all of the "cheat" options in preferences, because landings are indeed quite difficult. I'm no Chuck Yeager, but regardless I have to pull the throttle back a great deal and drop the brakes and half-flaps to slow down enough to make an approach, then drop the flaps all the way as I'm coming in. After making landings in European Air War, I think I'm a little spoiled with low approach-speed landings. Takeoffs aren't too shabby either, especially if you've turned off the Fast Spool-Up option so you have to mind how quickly you feed in more power (a flameout on the runway is, needless to say, rather dangerous ).

In regards to graphics, yeah - they're not photorealistic (though I'm running at 640x). Of course, European Air War is still the most popular WWII ETO sim, and its graphics pale in comparison to WWII Fighters. Does that tell you something? At any rate, you're not going to find a sim produced in the last couple years that will allow you to fly F-86s anywhere but in MiG Alley. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

(The one thing I agree with you about is the absence of a Padlock Center command; again, I think that something along the lines of EAW's padlock system would be more beneficial. Oh well...)

I'm keeping MA and I do like it just giving some observations. About take offs (yes to real settings) the emersion factor is low (IMHO) There is no feel of speed build that you feel in a real plane (I only fly a prop in the real world but take-off speed is a rush in any plane). Its like this...if you drive a sim like Nascar3 and you go 200 mph it feels fast, but in this sim when your picking up speed on the runway it doesn't feel accurate, it feels slow. And on landings its missing the feel of bounce. Can you dig it guys, or do you own stock in this game? Have a good one.

I haven't tried it because of two words:

1) POWER
2) UP'S

Should've gone straight to Sega Dreamcast. That and the fact that the team that worked on it has been gone for months...yet they ship it anyways.

I'm having a good time with Mig Alley. It bloody rocks! About what the mate said concerning take-offs and landings, I can see his points since I'm a pilot also...the thing that gets to me is the squeeching sound while on the ground (OUCH). It appears that the positioning (pilots view) is too low while your on the ground, almost like your only about a foot off the ground. Bet that could be a reasonably easy fix for an up-coming patch...what do ya think Empire? Besides the occasional lock-ups, actually I hate bloody lock-us, the game is a blast. Clear skys y'all!!!

Everybodys got to remember that they are flying a jet and that approach speeds will be much higher than in EAW for example. You've got to start/plan your approach much farther away (kinda hard with that close horizon though), don't wait till the last minute then dive at the runway, come in flatter. And keep your speed UP. The higher speed will help keep you from getting blown around by the wind. Also, if you are throttled back so much that you can't do a go-around you are coming in way too slow and are just asking for trouble! The slow speeds will make the plane hard to control and you also have no margin for error...if you stall, you're dead.

Try a less steep approach, then pop your speed brakes and flaps...this will cause a lot of drag and will allow you to use higher throttle settings to keep the engine spooled up...in case you need the power.

Happy landings!

Doug

I have to say, I've been flying real aircraft for quite a long time, and the takeoff rolls in Mig Alley are very realistic.

Have you ever watched a P-80 or F-86 take off before? They take forever to get moving. They use most of the runway in real life. That's why that guy went off the runway in California in his F-86 and plowed into a shopping mall. When he had his flame out, it was already too late to stop the plane. As far as the speed goes, I have to say it looks fine to me, but I'm also running at 1024x768. Maybe that makes that much of a difference.

As far as bouncing, maybe you guys bounce your Cessna 152's , but I've done landings in Bellanca Super Vikings and Piper Aztecs, and high performance aircraft don't bounce much. Watch an F-16 land and you will see 0 bounce, much like an F-86. Kind of sounds like you guys haven't been around real aircraft for very long. Sorry to jab you, but I have to correct your inaccuracies. Go take a ride in a 757 or something and count how many times they bounce when they hit the runway - 0 times if you have to ask.

Sorry, just flew in a 757, bounced two times, 1st bounce was so hard, I asked the pilot after we landed .."Was that a landing or did we just get shot down?"

Zorba- What res you using and what card. I find graphics good at 1024 with full tri-linear. Paladin - try this res with a good card and you'll see Zorba's opinion isn't right ( But entitled to it )

Sorry that you had a crappy pilot. Two ways to hit, one is hard for a short landing and to exit the runway quickly, and one is smooth. Bouncing is just a screw up, and the same kind of screw up bouncing can be easily accomplished in this program. Try a fast coming in fast.

DavBaron,
Graphics are in the eyes of the beholder!
There's no right or wrong. IMHO Zorba is spot on
Zorba,
As fans of MA, we are in the minority when it comes to the graphics!
