I'm running a 566MHz, 64MB RAM, and a VooDoo3 3000 PCI @ 1024x760 res. I have good frames per second, but am getting wavy, jagged lines in the terrain. More noticeable at lower altitudes (such as landing approach). I haven't updated any drivers since installing the card 2 weeks ago. Should I update drivers from 3dfx? I've fiddled with game graphics settings to no avail. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Yes...
plus there are a million other cockpits to choose from...
And you can run Voodoo 5 drivers in your V3, if you start wanting better FPS...
If I can be of any help, let me know.

Also F4 loves Ram. Search threads for grmcle comments, but I think you'll need more than 64.
Just yesterday I bought/added another 128 mb stick from crucial for 80 bucks.
The price of ram has really fallen, it used to be a buck per meg.

Do you happen to know the version name of the latest voodoo drivers that would work with my 3000?

no, my system runs F4 with 3dfx16v.3drv.
it's been stable with my configuration,so i haven't messed with it. Research what other V3 people use for F4 and Papadoc is a good source for info too.

Last weekend, Toecutter came up with a link from an Overclocking message board. I gave it a shot, and it worked great. What it boiled down to was Uninstalling V3 via device manager, removing 3dfxTools, setting display properties to a generic SVGA, then rebooting. When it detects the V3, you just send it to where you unzipped the new drivers. It was the BETA drivers for Voodoo 5 on the 3dfx site, You wont have FSAA, although the panel for it will be in your display properties afterwards, but I have OC'd my board to 185, and have better color and frame rates for it.
It will ultimately list your card as Voodooo Series, Not V3 anymore, so you'll know you got it when your Device Manager lists it that way.

*DISCLAIMER* I can't be responsible if it doesn't work, but if it doesn't, just reboot into safe mode, and reset everything to V3!!
Besides, it should work for ya, I didn't have nay kind of error or other trouble, and it's been over a week.

I have searched the archive for that post, but it looks like admin took it away for some reason.
I'll post a new topic and see if I can get Toecutter to redirect on this.

ALSO, when you unzip the downloaded drivers, DELETE the inclosed Setup exe. It causes an install problem...

Hi!

A good site for information about the Voodoo 3, BIOS settings enhancing and 3rd party driver development is the following one

Ok,
It's not hard at all.
I just d/l'd and installed DX8.
Then went to the 3Dfx website, and d'l the new V5 drivers, DX8 compliant.
Next, go into your c:\Windows\Temp file and make sure it is empty, or move anything that you know you need to keep..This is where the V5 driver extract to..just make sure there aren't any other Voodoo drivers in there, or you might get confused as to which one is which..I did
Go into your Device Manager, and remove your V3 from the list.. ignore the warnings..
Reboot.
When your system comes back up, asks for the V3 disk, just use the browse filter, and nav to C:\Win\Temp. It will say these aren't the correct drivers, but it's ok..it runs fine with the drivers released just yesterday, and I used the DX8 link in AV8R's thread to grab that file.
Nice and smooth, that old pause when it seeks from the HDD is HISTORY, and I'm getting better FPS than I have ever seen. Even in Jane's WW2 Fighters, which was terrible when you opened up on a ground target with .50 cal.
BTW, I'm using the WQHL drivers now, just to see if it worked. I originally did thid with the Betas.
If you have any other questions and I can help, I will be glad to.

Wow kenneth running V3-OC to 185 mhz, i thought that was beyond the limit without lots of additional cooling. I remember reading 178 was safe with the heatsink only. Hook,If you have not done so already,it is recommended that under control panel, display, advanced, 3dfx tweaks screen. That when you click the Glide/openGL that Force mip mapping is checked, limit texture unchecked, and force tripple buffer is checked.

Okay, thanks. I'll give it a try. I also posted a forum about upgrading to 128MB Ram from my 64. What improvement can I expect?

less stuttering with more ram. I would buy the 128 stick for 80, but you can run with 64 to 128. You however will notice you hard drive light blinking on frequently with less ram, which means slower performance as it goes to the swap file.

Yeah, but I've also got my case loose.
Haven't had any problems with it so far, and I've had it a year now.
I'm really drooling for a V5 or the next gen GeForce coming out..

I'd also like to mention, although you probably already know, that you can keep your 64 MB RAM in there, and just add a 128 to it, you know..right? It kind of sounded like you were going to pull your 64 for a 128..just add it!!
And yes, you will see a HUGE difference when you add more ram..not just in F4, but in everything you do, from booting up to flying SEAD missions over the FLOT.
Have Fun.
