Well, it finally arrived. I ordered an Elsa Gladiac GeForce2 GTS 32MB AGP card Tuesday (349.00 at ShopElsa.com) and it was here the next day. I installed the card and when I finally settled on a driver set, I chose to reinstall Flanker, patch it to 2.02 and have another look...

I am glad I did. I first tried the sim with FSAA on the minimum setting--the graphics looked great, but the FPS hit was significant. So I turned it off and tried again. With 1024x768, texture noise off, no mipmapping, 16 bit color, low object density, low roads rivers, medium visibility, High textures, canopy reflections off, no smoke or shadows. The thing still looks great!

System
P3620 (engineering sample with multiplier 5 and FSB=124)
384 MB RAM PC100 (running at 124 MHz)
18 GB WDD
Cambridge surround speakers.
PCI 128
FLCS/TQS
19" ViewSonic G790
Elsa Gladiac GeForce 2 GTS with Elsa 5.22 drivers, memclock 340, core 200.

I tried Flanker again and was amazed at the imporvements in the FPS. The strange thing about the ELSA drivers (based on 5.22 nvidia), is that the performance starts slow and then 'ramps' to a much higher value, more so in Falcon than Flanker. Flying along the coastline, I was getting 50 (!) FPS, constant, looking through the hud--the normal view. Around cities and objects, the FPS would dip to 33 and sometimes as low as 20, but thats about it. I even tried one of my campaign missions, and the FPS were still great, 20-30 FPS. I was skeptical that a video card, even this one, would benefit anything. But that is not the case, and similar leaps in FPS were seen in Falcon. Janes F-18 showed no difference. Perhaps the 800 MHz CuMine will help F-18 FPS numbers...most likely it will be run at 992 MHz if my overclocking goes well...

And if I use the 3.68 drivers from NVIDIA things just get ridiculously fast

In my opinion, this was good money spent. The image quality is fantastic and the performance gains are real. They show up in benchmarks and with the mark one eyeball tests as well.

I think I am going to sit down with the book 'Strike Eagle--Flying the F-15 in the Gulf War' By William L. Smallwood and try to recreate missions based on the ones he wrote of in his book.

These are just some of my first impressions of the GTS card, but they are good ones. I have not really tweaked, poked, and prodded to maximize everything, but it sure did speed up Flanker. I wonder how the P3800 will help....?

Kobra, out.
