You can get replacement sound files here: http://www.cl.spb.ru/echomsk1/admin/ruswingman01.zip

To install this files you will need Alexey Egorov's SFXeditor. Download it here: http://alexe.newmail.ru/sfxeditor.zip

There are two variants of each voice message so select whichever you like the most. Then replace the files vmie__3422, vmie__3522, vmie__3622, vmie__3722 in sounds.sfx with corresponding files from zip archive and select "write SFX file". Enjoy. :-)

These sounds brought to you by BlackFox (The Voice), Carlos (recording) and Pavel Chernichenko (sound processing and mastering). Recorded at "Echo of St. Petersburg" radio studio.

Great news, thanks!

But I have to ask again, can anyone give a transcript of what the russian voices actually say (well wingmen don't say much anyway, but RITA would be important)? I'm willing to learn, but it's hard to do by guessing alone. ;-)

Is there a readme for this thing in english? Do the added sounds have to be any specific format or size? etc. etc. The russian readme doesn't seem to help much.

The only requirement is that the sound files are in WAV format. As long as their headers contain the correct information about sampling rate, size, etc. this sounds will do just fine.

Hmmm, i've tried a couple sounds and none have worked. The sounds that were replaced are just mute now. I'm evidently doing something wrong.....

That's what I was doing with the editor and it worked (to some degree). After you open the Flanker 2 Sound Editor (that small program in zip file), press "open sfx file" button and give it the location of the sfx file in flanker/sounds directory. It will decompress the sfx file and create all its components as wave files in the same directory as the editor program. Put the replacement files to some other directory. In the editor, select the sound you want to replace and press "replace sound" button. Give the location of the new files. After the file is replaced, verify it by "Play". Write the changes to sfx file and you are all set.

My only concern with this was that after inserting the replacement files, the sfx file has different (larger) size. This, being generally OK, creates some sound anomalies, i.e. I was hearing static / noises when switching views or exiting simulation to main menu. I had to work the replacement files slightly to make them smaller and then used them.

Yeah that was exactly how I did it. I really wish they would have made this game a little more customizeable. I mean they gave it the mission editor then made it this difficult to add sounds. Kind of annoying when the sounds you replace have to be the same size.
