Good article, but like MANY from CombatSim, the assumption is made that your readers know where to go to download the goodies that you talk about.

C'mon! Be a good FAC and pop some smoke (URL's) so I know where to fly my plane (browser).

Thanks, and I did.
The Delphi forum site at http://www.delphi.com
has probably the largest, most up-to-the-minute repository of things Falcon. you have to register, but it's worth it for finding patches etc. hot off of developer's hard drives.
Many links can also be found in the Falcon4 forum of this very site...

Hello all, I have a question about the Falcon turbo program. Didn't that program come about from the stolen source code?

I wonder if Combat Sims or the author of the article knows this.

I don't think Combat Sims should be promoting something that was derived from stolen code.
Can someone clear this up for me?

If this is the case don't you all think its better that we report this type of thing to Microprose versus getting Combat Sim in trouble for promoting a program that might be from stolen code?

I will send Microprose and Email just to be on the safe side of things. Maybe this is a hex edit but it seems unlikely from all thing things I am reading about the program.

This was a good article but I would like to add a few points:

In your graphics settings you have the object density turned down. Bad idea for reasons I believe may have already been discussed in Froglip's article. F4 will physically display less units and hold the remainder in reserve. When you destroy the units displayed, the reserve units will magically pop into their place. Not a great idea if you plan on taking them all out in one pass.

Second, I believe Benhur and Skypat released the first wide cockpit. Their original cockpit was extremely wide and Paul Wilson developed what we would now consider the "proper aspect" wide cockpit. All others have since followed in suit.

All in all a good article, although after a few days it is already out of date. Just another example of how quickly things move in the world of F4.

My apologies to M. Skypat- that bit of misinformation has been fixed.
Credit has been given where credit is due!
Thank you to those who have pointed out my error.
And please don't apologize about your English- it's buch better than my French (which is to say, nonexistant)!

Mr. Larry Franks,

With all due respect, you should mind your own bussiness. Combatsim is a big boy and can take care of themselves. Furthermore, I'm sure they have already thought of this.

Barron out

Yes i am listening

Widepit, maybe sometime in the future.

Good article in general.

Usefullness of TAC DATA etc.. mainly because yes it can be done, and it reflects the iBeta changes, the default TAC DATA accessed in the UI is now outdated, also its good for reading on long flights up north

The TAC VIEW, just there as a request for people who want large MFDs and nothing else to look at, does make picking targets somewhat easier.

At present cant add in the flight plan data etc.. this would be good, would though require HEX fixing etc..

Good stuff anyway, didnt sound biased towards anything. Love the swiss army knife bit

I have found that since Falcon 4 was dumped by Hasbro it has gotten better, and thanks to Joel, Skypat, Paul Wilson, and all of the others that have Enhanced Falcon 4. I took it off my hard Drive for months and with all the Patches and enhancements it has become a new sim to play and have fun in. I could not even land right in F4 until the the iBeta Patches. Now i'm running Full Ace mode and landing perfect 3 pointers, with all that has been done to enhance it. Thank you all for making the Benchmark sim Tons better.

FYI Moral Police, the patch in question is a hex edit on 1.08. The article is not about eRazors patch which seems to have upset you deeply.

Don't worry, the Habro gestapo isn't going to come and get combatsim and yourself if you use it.

Excellent article! It has served as a good primer to the user 'pits available. Cleared some confusion for me, that's for sure. Heh! I may even download one - but I understand there's another utility required in order to install the cockpit art?

The utility your looking for I think is called winzip :-)

Just download the cockpit and unzip it to your falcon4\art\ckptart directory.

Make sure your running the correct resolution.

Groucho,

All technicalities aside, this was about the
best article, and most useful article, and
most needed to see article on a HUGE topic
that was needed to be done.

Im sure there could be 5 more and still not
exhaust all the patches, enhancements and
details within life after Hasbro.

Honestly, Ive about given up reading CSIM
articles due to the vapor thin value. But
yours breathed new hope.

Look forward to more from you in the future.

Larry
I applaud your moral concern in regards to the source code of Falcon 4.0. I am of the same mind as you when it comes to the filthy theft of software and code. In fact, I have compiled a list of over 6,000,000 names of people who have not paid for shareware and who have illegally copied games and programs. As you seem to be a trooper in fighting the good fight, I would like to forward these names to you so that you can do the appropriate action of informing the police and putting these miscreants in jail where they belong.

To Larry and Darkspoor.

I believe you two are total idiots. Since Hasbro/Microprose no longer pays anyone to fully provide support for this product anymore, it seems only fitting that we who still pay for this title with our hours, and support of new initiates should be able to change the game at will. If I didn't know better I'd say you're the same person. If you were a true Falcon4 fan you wouldn't post such an anal stupid remark in a response column to address an excellent article. Get a life and get lost!

The article states that there are no 3D cockpit mods available.

Huh? There are even a couple in the Delphi Forum... not to mention the GTT one.

True, but there are issues with the placement of the gauges that cannot be currently resolved. If you try the GTT cockpit you will notice that the gauges are all screwed up because they cannot be moved.

Personally I use Rufus Parson's 3D cockpit.

Good article...I was unaware that the default cockpit impacted frame rate more that the newer "home brewed" versions...I'll be checking out a new cockpit...

When you address "fly any plane" in your next article...please reference new cockpits being designed for the different aircraft...it would be great if someone (programmer) was able to develop an patch which automatically installed the correct cockpit for whichever plane is identified to be flown...such a patch could be implemented via the "F4Patch" program...

Great Article, can't wait for the next part.
I have a question for the experts though. I just got a geforce2 GTS (64mb) and when I went to the F4 setup it only gave me the option of "Display" for video card. Is that normal for this card?

Also, I scoured the delphi site for the "turbo" program but couldn't find it. Anyone know where I can get it?

Thanks,

-Geb

Because the Geforce is the only (probably) graphics card in your system, games will think of it as being the "display", or the "primary adapter" or the like. This is normal and completely OK. Da,mned good card BTW!

Cheers, Wulf.

Great article. I really appreciate all those who keep improving Falcon and those who periodically write summaries to keep the rest of us up to date.
With Falcon there should never be a need to consider another military flight program. It was better than anything else when it came out and now so improved that none of the competitors could ever catch up. It looks like they aren't even trying.
Hasboro should be delighted. They should feel like General Motors when a Chevrolet is running in the Indianapolis 500. It no longer looks like the car they made, but everyone calls it by its name and GM continues to get the credit they deserve for their original effort.
My hat's off to all of you who keep improving the sim and those of you who are kind enough to make the upgrade instructions simple enough for me to understand.
