Please post here the things you hate in a sim so we can avoid putting them into "OpenSim". Please state the game and the feature. (Please, no flaming of each other: respect all posts.)

Dislike awkward key commands or games that don't allow keyboard remapping.

Standardise on key strokes.

A = Autopilot
F = Flaps up/down
G = Gear up/down

etc..

KISS should be the general rule.

I enjoyed Total Air War. I still have it, but to be honest the graphics on the F-22 aircraft turn me right off. It looks like a big black blob, what a shame. Maybe Rage studio's would consider selling the code.

I hate wingmen that are not very smart, and any sim that does not allow extensive or realistic wingmen control.

Avoid pop up comms menus and the first person pilot's voice, if the simmer is using voice activated software (e.g. Game Commander).

I agree with stethen.
When using Game Commander to give your wingman a command, first YOU say it, then the guy that's SUPPOSED to be you says it.
I hate that.

However, the first person voice should be available to people who would like to use
it...so maybe an ON/OFF setting somewhere would do nicely.

In my opinion, the possibility to lower the CPU workload enough to get decent FPS is very important. The Janes F18 sim is fabulous, but the low FPS turns ppl off.

Things to avoid: Graphics etc..

The Flanker 2 "pop up" graphics affect.

A 3D only pit - JFA18.

Unrelealistic cockpit layouts - USAF/IAF

Non-clickable pits - everything bar F4.

I hate online play that turns into the never ending, repetitive furball. You have to have options: head to head, dogfight, moving mud, etc. It's got to have cooperative mode where you can fly against an AI generated scenario with your friends.

I also would have to say moron wingmen. I realize that there is possible dumbing down of wingman for there to be more of a challenge for the human pilot. That being said I would like to see the wingmen AI up to the level of at least Falcon 3. Dave.

Greetings ChopstickQ,
Great idea you have floating around but before you take it too much further it would be great if you could make contact with me. We have some interesting news for you. A similar project to which you are all conversing was started around 3 months ago now and is well underway although for various reasons we have been lying a little low thus far. We would like to speak with you about your thoughts on potential project direction, etc. Afterall we don't want to re-invent the wheel and have multiple "open source" projects running when we are all aiming for the same goal

regards,

Moose.

Please check out the Amiga SDK at www.ammiga.com - IMO might be slow now, but who knows where this may lead?

My biggest gripe is that combat flight sims are so slow on the uptake with Linux.

I work with Windows NT, W2K, and Linux in a commercial corporate environment, and I am amazed that anyone can actually like working with the MS products, they are majorly UNSTABLE!

Cheers
Teapot.

These may have been listed previously, but my main gripe is any enemy weapon or plane (or even your own) that outperforms its limiting restrictions.

Good examples of this is:

* super-performance enemy A2A missiles;
* unrealistic bomb damage;
* too many enemy aircraft.

Cheerio

I disagree. How realistic is it with a 2D cockpit? I say it should only have a 3D pit like F-18, now that computers are powerful enough.

I find the 2D cockpit to look more realistic than the 3D cockpit. I haven't seen a single 3D cockpit that gives me the same authentic feel (and I've placed by behind often enough in cockpits of real fighter aircraft) than the feel of Xis' Beta6A 2D cockpit in Falcon 4.0.

I have no objects against both a 2D and 3D cockpit but I wouldn't go for a 3D-only cockpit.

Besides a 3D only cockpit might make the sim completely unplayable for the people with lesser machines. And you have to think about them too.

How realistic is it with a 3D cockpit? Either way, you are still sitting in front of a computer monitor. Besides, computers are not powerful enough. F/A-18 is dog slow in campaign, even on a fast machine.

I think a very high quality fully functional 3D cockpit is essential in a fighter combatsim, look at how F16 agressor did it

Unrealistic threat levels. (never ending supply of aircraft ). Having to splash 10-20-30 or more bogeys before receiving acknowledgement for your efforts. (1 kill - great. 5 kills - a legend)

Briefing Packets aren't available for printing.

I frequently have lunch with my flying buddies on Thursdays before we fly on the weekend. I wish there was a PRINT BRIEFING button that would dump out a file for printing/emailing that included all the relevent briefing info a pilot would need for the TE or flights selected. It's much easier to discuss the missions face-to-face than to waste precious flying time doing a mission overview using Roger Wilco.
