My system:

K6-2 450
128MB SDRAM
12G HD (4G open)
Voodoo3 2000 PCI

I have F4 at full detail at 1024X768. Only thing turned down is Dencity (set one notch past half way) and bubble (mid). I find that a fresh boot befor playing helps alot and I also run a scandisk/defrag every other day. I have my computer do this automatically lat at night. I don't have any trouble in any mode of play. Maybe this will help for my fellow gamers with a small amount of cash to get the most out of F4. This also makes me wonder why people say you "HAVE" to have a high end sys to get good frame rates in F4. My bargen basement system dose just fine on all 50 of my games at full detail, and I play them all.

Turning down density is a Bad Thing. It has been said before that turning it down takes away from the simulation.

I don't notice much differnce at full dencity. At curent setting I can see buildings at the horizion, depending on the fog.

I also d/l a atmospere fix that gave a cleaner looking fog and better sky line, but the big plus was higher frame rates!

Hey
I have been defrag'n for about 5 years now, every night. It all started playing DOOM
I noticed that after playing a graphic intense game ny files got all screwed over.
So I started defrag'n nightly
now I defrag A LOT since I play F4 and UT
everynight and everyday (if time permits)

Sometimes I'll defrag 3-4 times a day!! I believe in keeping up a good maintenance program for my 'puter which in doing
so I rarely and I do mean rarely get any
serious crashes.....

density also affects how many ground units you see in campaign. i had density at the lowest settings once and saw maybe 4-5 troops per squad. after the recent findings about object density i turned it up the whole way and am seeing roughly 30-40 troops in one squad. now its actually dangerous to fly over advancing troops. im Also seeing much much much more ground activity now that i turned it up but it also kills the framerate for me. i just make the trade-off.....gameplay for graphics. i turn off all of the graphic detail and turn the bubble and object density up the whole way in campaign so i at least get an ultra-realistic expirience. i just keep reminding myself im getting a 1 ghz in november.......

That, boys and girls, is exactly why we don't turn down the density!

Rilex,

That post you linked, according to it I can drop a bunch of bombs on a groupe of troops but some will sorta "reappear." Would this explane why a IR sam that I drop a pair of rockeyes or Mk-82s is still able to fire after the bombs fit tight on top of it? I have this happen alot in BAI and CAP missions.

The last time I defragged it took me two days and two nights...I must say I've got a 20.2 gig HD and there's 19 gigs of data on it, still is this fairly normal?? (OK, this OT, I just want to know please)

Yup, and that is exactly why we don't turn down that slider. You can't hit an enemy you can't see

Which is why I use Norton Utilites - its disk optimisation program runs much, much faster than the Win98's defrag.

when I defrag it takes me about 5+ hours with about 8.5 gigs used out of 10.2 gigs- depends on the last time I cleaned it up though

Defrag is super fast on WinMe, so those of you who are still using Win9x should probably upgrade if you want to speed up your defrags (and a lot of other things too). Just make sure you have around 128MB RAM before you upgrade, otherwise I don't think you'll be very happy.

You guys opened up a lot of cans of peaches here.

Defragging is probably the best thing you can do for F4. Do it often -- at least once per day. Don't want to do that? Then get Norton Utilities and Optimize your disk once every week or so. I have a 20 gig HD and it takes me about an hour to optimize once per week.

Object density -- if you set this below 5 then you will loose some of the ground units. Take the DPRK AAA battalion for instance -- with OD turned down to 4, you will reduce the guns in the battalion by 1/2.
Check it for yourself -- set OD to 4, fly over a DPRK AAA battalion and record the flight on ACMI. Then go into the ACMI tape and count the number of guns in the battalion. There will be three of each type. Go back and do it again at a setting of 5 and it will show you six guns of each type.

There was a post on this forum (Alex I believe)that said that with the OD turned down and you have a battlion of 40 tanks, then only 20 of them will appear in the game. You kill these 20 and as soon as you do the other 20 (in reserve) will appear and take their place. If your OD was turned up you would get a chance to get all 40 to start with.
