Revisited the Naval Avaition Museum again yesterday. Living in Pensacola affords me the opportunity to do this every now and then. As usual, it has been renovated again since I was there before. Really a beautiful building and display. It gets better every time I see it. It obviously is an ongoing project. BTW -- Tass -- no F17 this time. Capped it off with a walk around tour of the USS Enterprise which was here for a few days visit. Went up to the main bridge and counted 6 flights of stairs to get there from the flight deck. About 3 more to the very top. Couple this with the distance from the flight deck to the ground and you have about a 15 story building there. I can't believe it floats. What a day I had.

George,
I went to the Enterprise, too, on Saturday. It would have been cooler if it didn't take all day! Still, now I can say I have done that.

I have been to the Navy museum 3 times, I think. It's the most impressive military museum I have seen. If you haven't yet, you should visit the armament museum at Eglin AFB.

This Saturday there is an Army Ranger demo at their camp on Eglin. There will be a weapons display, life fire demo, and I believe a paradrop! Should be cool!

Hi Grmcle,

Two years ago I've been visiting Pensacola Naval Aviation Museum and I must admit; pretty impressive. Funny that those F-18's (not the ones of the Blue Angels) are still landing on the base; I thought it was no longer in use by the Navy???
I also heard a story about the F-18 outside: it had suffered so many G's that the airframe structural limits were exceeded and therefore, it could not be used any longer by the Blue Angels.
Is that true? By the way: Nice beach you have there!

I'm jealous that you're so close to NAS Pensacola. I would love to visit there some day. However, I'm close to the US air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio. If you ever get up here there is a place you should visit. I've been going there for years, and it keeps getting better and bigger. They have hundreds of aircraft and spacecraft including: P-51, P-40, F-82, F-4, B-17, B-24, B-25, B-26, B-52, B-36, X-15, F-117, F-15, A-10, B-1, XB-70, F-86, Mig-15, F-105, A-1. Just to name a few.

It's a great place to visit, it's free, and it's open every day, but Xmas.

Hello grmcle,
Your post brought back good memories. I joined the Navy in '82 as a Electronic Warefare Tech. My schooling was in Pensacola for a year and a half. Learned to fix the SLQ-17 ECM gear. Had a good time there. Except never got use to the humidity.
After school did the rest of my 6 years on the USS Enterprise. At the time she was on the West coast in Alameda, CA. My GQ station was in the Starboard ECM room. That's at the very top of the island, hanging off the side. I think I've been up and down those ladders you talked about over a 1000 times.
Did they still have the "BIG E" painted on the back of the island? When I was on board, the Captain had "STARSHIP ENTERPRISE" painted on the front of the island. Also at the end of an UNREP he would play the theme song to Startrek. He was kind of a corn ball.
Anyways it's good to hear that's shes still steaming strong. Wont be surprised if shes around for anouther 15 years.

Have a good one

My Dad lives in Ft. Walton, so I try to visit both museums whenever I'm there...Magic of Flight IMAX movie at Pensacola was cool, nice touch being able to walk on the carrier deck inside where the WWII planes are...great museum!

Very cool being close to Eglin, seeing lots of 15's and C-130's from Hurlburt overhead...don't forget to visit Sammi's on Oakaloosa island...beautiful beaches...

For those near Long Island, a new aviation musuem opening within the year at Mitchell Field. I'll post details as I get...

I haven't been at NAS Pensacola since 1995. I was there at the airshow and all operational T-2's and T-34's were parked on the museum side-ramp. Luckily I got the museum busdriver to (get this) "get his hat blown out of the window and had to drive ALLL over the flightline with 3 mph to get it".

Me and a friend were the only ones on the bus and we got every single plane on the flightline on film!

Dylock and grmcle,

WOW, we live in a small world. LOL, I live in Pensacola too! I also have a condo in FWB.

I used to know a flight instructor at the Museum, he let me fly the T-34's! That museum sure is a nice one, they say it's as good the National Air Museum in Washington D.C.

I remember when the Independence came here a while ago. I thought that ship was impressive, man the Big 'E' was something else compared to it. These new guys coming to the ship are really excited about working on planes (they also were worried about the punishment too).

odin6,

Pensacola is the craddle of Navy Aviation, I don't think they would ever close down this base.

Hey guys, Wow, all of the Emerald Coast simmers in one forum!! I was over at P-cola a few eeks ago for the BlueAngel Modelfest. Once again, I speant the day admiring the aircraft. Being stationed at Eglin AFB, I get to see AF jets all day, so a change was nice. BTW, the YF-17 is over at the USS Mobile, on loan to the museum there. We need to get together one day, so all can meet face to face. Take care.

Odin6--

They call it Sherman Field and yes it is still operational. When I play golf on the base, the F18's and F14's and others will blow your ears off. The course is on the end of the runway.

Rider600--

"The Big E" is still painted on the back of the island. Didn't look at the front.

Rider600,

The only thing on the front of the Big 'E' was:

"Careful for Props Blades and Blasts"

Yup. Been there...
Apart from what Max mentioned you can also see there F-16, SR-71 and a real beauty: F-22. Now that's a nice plane! :-)

<append> I just remebered, they have an F16 'pit you can sit in for you cockpit designers (although I belive it's an older version than the one in Falcon originally, but nice to see what 30 degrees vertical offset feels like) </append>

Is Sammy's still there on Santa Rosa Island? My friends and I spent WAY too much time there!

Another good place for a beer in Pensacola is McGuire's Irish Pub.

The Aviation Museum in Pensacola is still the best one I've seen yet (I haven't been to the Air & Space Museum in D.C.).

Sammy's is still here, but I didn't think too highly of it in my couple of short visits. I preferred Las Vegas and San Antonio, where you can at least get close to them and maybe get suffocated by a nice pair in your face. More tang for your buck!!! Maybe Sammy's had a heyday...

I am moving from here to Southern Cal (home) next month anyway.

I heard that the Wright-Patterson museum is much bigger than Pensacola, but in PNS were bigger, it would be better. This is from someone who has been to both.

Dang everybody else from the Emerald Coast was posting here so I did not want to feel left out. The Armament Museum right outside Eglins gates is not to bad. They have several Aircraft especially the THUD. But of course it has all the weapons you could care to look at. If you wanted to see what the munitions for the Air Force looked like for real that would be the place to go. I was a Load Toad when I was in and everytime I go there it brings back some good memories.
Maybe if they get some more room they could improve on what they have. Good to see ya'll Bozo out.
