Okay, I don't know what the hell's happened but my D drive, a DVD, no longer shows up in "My Computer". Just the E drive, a CDRW. When I boot up, it's detecting the DVD as the primary master but I can't access the damn thing when I get to my desktop. If I go into "Control Panel/System/Device Manager", it says the DVD drive is connected and working. So I'm clueless. No one on the techie boards seems to know anything so I'm asking you guys as a last resort ( no offense )

Can't access EAW through the E drive. I'm starting to get the shakes.

Jbunnelle,
don't have a DVD, but have seen things like that many times: for some reason, Windows suddenly doesn't more detect a device that was working just a minute ago. The Control Panel says it's OK because it WAS OK before vanishing, I think.
AS BIOS is recognizing it, the problem is (of course!...) with Windows. Try reinstalling the device - 99% chances it will work again.
Good luck!

Spit9, out.

Thanks for the suggestion. Yeah, I reinstalled Windows over the existing install hoping it would correct/replace any missing files. But it didn't. I really don't know what to do next.

I also tried reinstalling the drive itself. Nothing.

Hu-oh... OK, let's try other ways...
- You can try to access the drive from a DOS prompt. If it is recognized, the problem is definitively with Windows, and maybe you must delete all the Windows directory and do a new install.
- If it is NOT recognized, open the 'puter and check cables; if they are loose, this can be the problem.
- Before going ahead, remove the DVD and try to install it in another machine, to be sure the problem is not in the drive itself. If the drive works, I'm afraid the only way out is to reinstall Windows . If not, better you have it checked by a good technician.
Let us know what you find!...

Well it sounds like the same problem i had with my cd-rom. It would say its ok in windows but i would put a cd in and it wouldnt work. dos wouldnt help either. I simply took it to the place where i bought my puter and they put a new one in, thatnk god for service agreements. LIke they all said, pop the top and check all the connections, there might be some dust in there or something might have been jarred loose.

This error is nearly the exact same my brother had just recently with his CD-ROM drive, whenever he clicked on it in "My Computer" Windows told him "not ready" or something. We took his drive and put it into my computer, and the same message was there. Solution: he got a new drive

Maybe check the cables, maybe check the jumpers on the back of the drive if they are on "master" and "slave" for the second drive - I assume the DVD and the CD-RW are on the same IDE cable - check them as well...

Well, it doesn't state that it's "not ready" because there's not even an icon for it in "My Computer" for me to click on. Just the E drive. You wouldn't even know it was there unless you went into the device manager or saw it detected at the boot. Hmm......
