This is one i've been dying to ask for a while. I have a TNT2 32MB card allowing me to play in Direct Draw which means I'm missing the "3D" aspect of gaming, is this correct? If i went to a voodoo based card what are the benefits of spending the extra money and will it make that much of a difference? When I get down low in EAW the trees look like a "cross" when looking down on them and in other games like Red Baron 3D I see the polygon effect down low which looks nothing like the screenshots I've seen, including pictures on the box, does 3DFX fix that?

Any help is appreciated.

That's all there is I'm afraid. To really see what games are like without 3D go into the configure screen for EAW and click on "software."

Some cards will look better than others but usually in subtle ways - the lines are sharper or the colors are brighter, for example. With a TNT2 card with updated drivers you're only a couple steps below state of the art right now.

I don't live in a 3D world al the time, on the computer (heheheh), so I really enjoy great 2D performance. Unfortunately many 3D video cards have really crappy 2D performance. Graphics which do not have the crispness and clarity they should in 2D apps. So, I enjoy my matrox Video Cards. They have very respectable performance, but are not the fastest gaming cards. But, I can be very happy to use them in all apps and games. if you want to play only games and don't care about anything else maybe Voodoo, TNT, or whatever are your type of card. But if you want a well rounded setup, look at your options with cards that deliver both 2D/3D performance. IMHO

Too much stuff to list. I have owned TNT and Hercules Thriller Video cards over the years.

I think you mean Direct3D, not direct draw.

Your TNT2 beats the pants off any Voodoo before the Voodoo5--especially since it supports more colors than Voodoo / glide mode.

Trust me, that's the way stuff *looks* in 3D--software mode just has less colors, and runs slower.

Are you sure you've configured the detail options to max? and are running in hi-res?

(you should *at least* be able to run in 1024x768 with a TNT2!

Yes Direct3D, my mistake. I am able to run up to 1280x1024. So are you saying the "cross" trees and squares on the ground are normal?

Thanks.

If you get up close, the trees and bushes do appear to be two flat pieces put together like an "X". From a bit of distance, it creates an illusion of depth. Likewise, the ground up close may appear to be lots of squares interlocked. Again, this is because you spend so much more of your time aloft than down low. I only notice the "squares" and fake "stage trees" when I am just about to touch down. I believe this effect is unavoidable, as it appears in every sim I've played.
I think your references to Direct-Draw come from you experience with Red Baron 3D. Red Baron 3D does 3D in Glide only. The game is a pathetic software-rendered 2d mess on anything other than a 3DFX/Glide-based card.
As to whether TNT2 "beats the pants off" all glide cards prior to Voodoo 5: well, if you really, really want to play RB3D, this is simply not the case. Some of the older games (F-15, Flying Corps Gold, the aforementioned RB3D, etc) only work (or work well) in Glide. I have run EAW in both Glide and TNT2. The colors that are available to TNT2 are far brighter and "prettier" than those of Glide/Voodoo, which are limited to a specific palette. Howver, IMO, the terrain is rendered a little better with a Voodoo 3, with a little "smoothing" of the pixellated edges that occur w/TNT2. Unless you want to change the card in order to play those Glide-based games, I would not spring for a 3DFX/Voodoo II or III card, as it would be 6 of one and 1/2 dozen of another (IMO). With 32MB memory on the TNT2, as opposed to 16MB on a Voodoo 3, the TNT2 should be a tad faster.
Voodoo 5-that's a whole nother story!

Not suggesting he get a new card, but for the record, the slowest V3 is faster than the fastest non ultra tnt2.

ogdens: Just adding on to my earlier reply-Red Baron 3D, like EAW, has a dedicated community/cult which continues to add new terrains/skins/flight model improvements, etc. With a Voodoo/Glide card, RB3D should look like this:

or this:

The terrains are user add-ons, as are the plane skins in the winter screenshot.

Just do like me, I've just got a TNT2 M64 card, but am keeping my faithful old Voodoo2 alongside it for that unmissable Glide moments

S! Gen Savage.

I heard that RB II now has flyable 2-seaters now. Do you know if this is true?

Sulla: Last time i downloaded any RB3D-related stuff, the 2-seaters were still unflyable (though all the single seaters were). If you find out anything to the contrary, let me know and please post a link to it. Most of my RB3D downloads are from the excellent Beery's Red Baron Site.

I have downloaded what is said to be a flyable two seater with a rear gunner - haven't yet got round to trying it out. See the discussions on the RB section of the Delphi Flight Sims board:

Gen Savage, Thanks for that link to RB. I bought the game months ago but haven't had the opportunity to get into it yet. I thought I'd try it when I burn out on EAW, but how can one burn out when the damn thing is "new" nearly every day! See you over the Channel. Reese

Reese and DBond: ditto. Beery's patches have really made RB3D a great game, but like you, I guess I'll play it when I get tired of EAW (which doesn't appear to be anytime soon!).
