I'm kinda curious about the groups perceptions of what an acceptable frame rate is?

In "shooters" the minimum is usually 30fps. Anything lower is a loser.

Also, I'm wondering which view you CFS2 folks are using. If I go to HUD only view I can get 40-50fps at 1600x1200x32.

But, if I turn the cockpit that slips to 35-10fps depending on what's in front of my nose.

One more comment; this game is fun! We should probably worry less about maxing out the resolution/options/eye-candy and more on greasing the bad guys.

It's simple, under 30fps you are a looser in all games ! But in flightsims you can fly smooth at 15fps If nothing going on, but when you comes to the action you will notis if you are under 30fps that's for sure ! But to run eg.. CFS2 at 1600x1200 32bit and all at max, and have 30fps at lowest in 2D Cockpit you must have a Monster Computer, I wonder If that Computer really exist today ? I have a P3-600 256meg GeForce GTS combo, and I have trubble in 1024x768 16bit with sliders at 6, when I see explosions close to me, and there is many planes and ships in action. Looks that I have to upgrade again But then there is a new game that will demand more than that, there always is !!! We will never be satisfied, that's for sure

What a TRUE statement! I normaly try and go with some new vidio card memory or something for about 2 years before a major upgrade. But now with CFS2 I am FADING fast! I have allready started buttering up my house boss for a new total upgrade at the first of next year. Got to start planting that seed early when one does not control the $.

I've got a p3-600e running as an p3-800eb. My memory is Mushkin PC133 CAS2. My video card is a Pr2-64 w/det6.31 drivers in Win 98.

If I crank up the resolution to 1600x1200x32, the game slows way down in the 2d cockpit (maybe 10fps). Detail slider is at "6".

Do you guys actually fight with the 2d cockpit turned on? The panel take up half the screen. When I fly, I "look" out the plexiglass and "glance" at the instruments.

This is a great game if you love aviation/warbirds!!!!!!!!!

I get 15-40 fps on my celeron 466 with 128 megs ram and GeForce2 MX. I have my celeron o/c to 526.

I run CFS2 at 1024x760 16 bit color at low detail.

I read somewhere that the average human eye/brain system can only discern about 25 or so fps-after that, you can brag to your friends how fast your computer is, but YOU can't tell the difference!

I am not swearing this is true, but it had something to do with how fast movies, TV, etc., display, and it makes sense.

Youve smeared butter all over the wife again? Could you post the pics here?

You are right but people look for extra high frame rates in hopes of never seeing it dropping below those 25 FPS you menioned during heavy action. Truth is, in order to acheive maximum FPS, maximum resolution, max colors, details, texturing, 3d sound and all the works, you need to spend beaucoup bucks on an expensive video card, processor and RAM.

When I change the game resolution from
1024x768 to 1280x1024 with no other settings
changes, my frame rate improves from 20 to
30 or better. Does this make sense?
My system is a P III 500mhz 128mb ram, 3D Prophet 32mb graphics card.. I just bought a 128 stick of RAM, but with all the controversy on the 128 vrs. 256 on this
forum, I'm not sure whether to break the
seal. Best Buy will probably take it back
anyway.

What RAM controversy? 256MB is certainly better than 128MB for sims. The cost effectiveness of going beyond 256 is debatable however.

I have a PII-300 w/ 192 MB RAM and a TNT2
Ultra 32 MB vid card...... I get around 25
fps in 800X600 and, believe it or not, when I change the resolution to 1024X768, it goes up to about 35-40..... it does take a hit when I get into a furball, but really not that much... what suprises me is that it went up, going UP in resolution... you would think it would go down.......

wow

I find that sometimes when you change the resolution the game will turn all your graphics settings down to 1, though it is very noticable when you look out your window and see a bunch of blurry colors instead of the sharp textures you are used to.

Thats the only thing i can think of that would cause a frame rate boost at high res, is the fact that other details may be down. I haven't even tried running the game in 1600, i hate torturing myself with beautiful slide shows

In flight sims, because of the closure speeds, anything less than 40 is terrible.

If you are head to head with a plane, both going 300mph (not kts) that is 880 feet per second closure rate, a little less than half as fast as a bullet...

Have you ever seen a video tape of a bullet in flight?

In jet sims, you need at least 55-60 frames, in prop sims, 45 is smooth.

Alot can change in that final 0.3 seconds, and you only get a couple peeks at it.

Theatrical frame rate (film) 25fps, and you can definately see that it sucks, say.. if Jaws *JUMPS!* out of the water to eat Cp. Quint. Video is 30frames non drop, and you can see that it isn't really that smooth either. (try slow-mo advance, a person walking covers about 2 feet between frames @ 3 meters)

Most people can detect frame density changes up to about 80 fps, and after that, it's just real nice.

Oh, sorry..

As much ram as you can eat, is the order of the day, and at todays prices for PC133 ($128Mb $79) get a load.

The reason some cards perform better at high res, is fill rate not being the bottleneck.

Framerate is all about arc-width and/or angular acceleration or PROPER MOTION.

However, FPS is all moot past the monitor's refresh rate, after that frame rate is truncated.

So the most you'll ever experience (even though you can't really see it, is around 85 FPS.

That's not to say pushing theoretical FPS past this truncated max is not good. . .it is, one always wants that poly crunching power for those moments with intense screenload.

I just changed by res from 1024x768 to 1152x864 and got an increase in framerate. What's the deal with that. It's also smoother when things get heavy. No pauses even when there's an explosion right in front of me. That's with effects on high!! Thinking about trying 1280x1024???

Do it BigShotEr..

It's nice.

1600x1200 is even nicer.

PC133, 128Mb, $60 today..

GeForceMX is around $75, depends on what you want (the one with 5.5ns ram.. is the one)
