I learned last night that the radial used for carrier approach can be implemented for airfields as well. In the mission builder I zoomed in on an airfield & added a tacan at the beginning of a runway that I will approach for landing. Using the waypoint tool I found the elevation of the runway, also taking note of the direction. I`ve noticed 4 basic headings of various runways, 09,27,36,18. This with elevation will need to be added to the tacan name. Various radials would be 90,270,360,180. Depends on what end of the runway you put your tacan. Its important that the tacan is at the beginning of the runway for your approach, whatever heading you choose for the beginning. This will affect your (distance & time to tacan readings), which tells you when you can touch down.

I named the tacan 9YourOut450. This told me that my radial will be 90 & elevation of the runway is 450 ft. I clicked tacan & flew towards it. I set CRS for 90 & clicked CSEL to lock it, just like the carrier. And there it is, a radial line on MDIS perfectly lined up with the runway and I`m 20 miles out, its dark & I can`t see a thing. I get lined up at about 15 miles out. Using (distance & time to tacan) together with (runway elevation), I know exactly when & where I can set the wheels down. I like to come in at about 1500 above runway, so with the elevation of the runway at 450 ft I came in at 2000 ft and touched down in the dark at 450 feet, at the beginning of the runway.

I do realize this is a carrier sim, (a great one at that), but with no airfield runway lights in this sim I wanted to come up with a low visibility tactic with ILS. Of course if your MFD`s are malfunctioning then all bets are off. Follow the rivers, but not to the top of a mountains.

Thought I would share this with you to experiment with. Enjoy the flight...

What a GREAT SIM, I have to stop repeating myself, but everyday its the same thing. WHAT A GREAT SIM...

Great info regarding tacans...I too created a base template that I use for all my mission I create..it has a tacan placed at one end of each runway in Janes world..I labled the Tacan R09, R18, R27 or R36 depending on runway number---for example my lable would read Murmansk R18...I tried to put tacans at each end of the runways to designate another runway approach for same air field but I figured out that approx 30 tacans can only be used in one mission (a limtation by Janes)..not the 60 required for double tacans at both ends of runway.

I would be interseted is seeing your template of all marked runways..

Regarding runway lightes, I heard janes maybe be trying to look into this and adding them in upcoming patch or patches. I havnt heard a definitive on this though.

I hope they do..I like the real world navigation and with the ability to add waves files we could actually create a ATC and get clearances to approach and land etc as we pass certain blue boxes that enroute along the way to any airport. If I could get a cool ATC voice I would like to take a stab at creating this effect.

Cheers

RE: runway lights

I'm positive I've seen runway lights at dusk in one of the training missions (AIM-120 training). Yet I've never seen them at night. I just thought I was going mad!

If either of you want to share your mission templates with other mission builders, you can send them to me and I will post them on Recluse and my F/A-18 Mission Builder site. You can find my email address on the Home page.

I`m about half way done with the template. I`m adding a bit more info. When I`m done you will be able to do full ILS at night with no problem. You will be able to tell what country & airfield it is by the tacan frequency & info in your plane. I`m using 1 tacan per base so I don`t use the tacans up, except Andoya since its on a peninsula. (Thanks to Simmer for pointing out tacan limitions). I`m putting the tacans in different locations so you will be able to land any direction you want by using different airfields so if your damaged you will find a direct approach for ILS quickly.

I`ll make the template available to all thanks to BaldEagle`s offer to post it.

Just wish I had more time. I`m down to 4 hours sleep, uhmm should I call in tomorrow? Or is it today...

Good Day...
