I know this has been brought up before, but I have not seen any resolution to this.
I just got the game. I installed on new Compaq Presario with Intel 810E chipset. Direct X 7. I get 7217 error trying to open game. I have tried all the various settings from tech support(an oxymoron). any ideas. All my drivers are up to date as they can be.
Am I missing something simple?

Are you using an "on board" video chipset or a slotted card? If I recall correctly (and don't bet on that ), the best way to solve this error with Compaqs, Presarios, etc was to install a different video card.

Ouch.
Not what I wanted to hear after dropping $1500 on a new system
I dont get it. I have a thinkpad laptop, and the game runs fine on that. it does not have a 3d card at all.

Are you running the 1.2 patch?

The 7217 seems to be an error inherent with 810e onboard chipsets. For some wierd reason EAW and some other games dont like the 810 Chipset, remember most onboard stuff is there to cut costs and not specifically the best thing for gaming, great for Excel and word but not all games. Thats why when I build custom rigs i usually recommend the older but still good 440BX-2 or the 820s or Athlon based boards.

If you have a Monster3d or 3dII select 3dfx as your Graphical API this should solve the problem. Will look further into it. I do remember a thread about this earlier, but as the search is Kaput! i am unable to find that thread again.

I think CFran is right about the 810 chip. I had one on my HP when I bought it and could never run EAW with it(same 7217 error). I had to install a Voodoo 3 to get back EAW. The strange thing is it ran fine on a different makers shared memory chip (can't remember who made the chip) on my old Packard Smells. I would be willing to bet the 810 chip is your problem. I've seen it called the gamer's nightmare on the web. I updated the drivers for it and it didn't help Sorry, that chip is bad news.

Kollos - sorry to report that I searched for half an hour using the forum search and the answer to my question ( http://www.combatsim.com/ubb/Forum24/HTML/002368.html ) was "unavailable" (a 404 actually ) it was moved and put elsewhere or its just gone west ! I think the most promising thread was called NEED HELP PLEASE !!! (the aforementioned 404) I DID fix it but for the life of me I can't remember how - it IS annoying but hang on in there ,and BTW I have a 3DFX Voodoo Banshee combo card so it can't be just the dred 810 chipset even although it IS kinda "dungish" Keep your chin up and I'll do some web searches and see what I can find.

Thanks for all the help. I was kind of worried about the "OnBoard 3D Graphics" setup on the Compaq, but you have to get what you can afford.
Lex, thanks for you work. If you find any info, please let me know. And yes I am running the 1.2 patch.
Thanks again.
Kollos out.

Kollos,

Intel has a new Driver set for the CA810E i810 onboard video, but since you have a Compaq and its an OEM you will need to see if they have the same upgraded driver set. This may or maynot help your situation.

If anything you can find a good monster3dII some where on the web for way under $100 as theyre pretty much in the Prehistoric age in terms of Technological lifetimes..LOL

I also had this problem. After many hours of frustration, phone calls to tech support at Hewlett Packard and Microprose, I gave up and installed a Voodoo3 2000 PCI card. If your machine is like mine, the graphic card is integrated on the motherboard. You give up your AGP support, but with the Intel 810 using shared video memory it isn't much to loss. If you choose this route be sure to disable the onboard video.
