S! All,

It has been a while since I have seen a hardware inventory, so I thought I would start one up again by embarassing myself.

My current Frankenputer resides in an old Gateway 486 tower case. The processor is a Cyrix PR200 (UGHH) with 48MB RAM. My only saving grace is a PCI Nvidia TNT with 16MB Video RAM.

Now you know why I stay with the BoB, those smoking streams of B17's turn into a slide show.

OK, no one else should be able to beat that, so don't be embarrased, tell us what ya got.

I'm flying with a Dell Pentium I 200 MHz with 64 Mb of RAM and a 3DFX Banshee card...it's an aging machine, but it serves me well. I would like to upgrade my 28.8 modem though -- it's *almost* intolerably slow.

I still fly my P 166 MMX, 64 megs RAM, and one Monster 3D2 with 8 megs video RAM. I can visually count the frame rate - I don't play online yet but I do have cable internet access. I find the discussions about video cards and motherboards interesting as my new computer will come in the next month or two. Even with this slow computer, I enjoy EAW.

I use a Toshiba Satellite 2595xDVD laptop to fly with, which has a Celeron PII 400 mhz processor and 64 meg of RAM. I'm unsure of what video card I have (it works well, tho :embarrased . The only thing I find the least bit disappointing is the fact that the 17 inch LCD display will NOT let me view the game in full screen. There's always a large black border around the perimeter of the game area. If anybody knows how I can fix this, I'll dance at their next wedding (altho, you may wish that you helped me out of pity instead). Other than that, I'm exstatic about my little portable bos. Now, if I could only find a folding MS Sidewinder Precision Pro (force feedback or not), I'd be able to fly anywhere.

My current PC is nearing the end of it's cycle...I upgrade fairly often.

It's a:

Celeron 366 O/Ced to 460Mhz
MSI-6163 m/b
128mb PC-100 RAM
RivaTnT2 Vanta 8mb AGP (I've just given my old Banshee to my brother, and I'm using this little Vanta till I get my Voodoo3.)
Sound Blaster PCI-64
Quantum Fireball SE 4.3 + Quantum Fireball LE 2.5 HDDs
Samsung 32x CD-ROM
WEN 17" Monitor

Anyhow I've arranged a deal whereby my Chip + Board are being sold for basically what I paid for them (I get stuff at cost) so I should be upgrading in a month or so.
I'm currently looking at a Athlon 550-650 on a MSI K7Pro motherboard, probably with a Voodoo3.

Those little K6-2s are loverly CPUs! The current cheapest available is a K6-2-400 and it's very cheap and quite good.

My brother's PC has a K6/2-300, running in a DFI P5BV3 m/b w/96mb RAM and a 16mb APG Banshee card. Runs almost anything. Will run EAW smoothly in 800x600 even thru a B-17 formation and even does Rogue Spear.

Running a Gateway G6 300mhz 64 m/ram and a
4 meg video card.Believe it or not,I get a
smooth frame-rate even with a sky full of
planes. Not so with CFS,Mig Alley or Janes
WWII.Something about EAW that allows me to
have this nice frame-rate.
Gonna upgrade the
tower soon but man,so many choices for CPU,
video card combos my head is swimming.Any
sage advice?

TQM: I may have had you beat up until a few weeks ago...I was running a P200 classic, no mmx, with a VooDoo1 card and EAW ran pretty good at low settings. But the new beast is an Athlon 600 system with a VooDoo 3500 and things run a bit faster now...

Gun Fodder, (sounds kinda like Grand Father eh?)

I also have to stay with no graphic details, this chip runs at 166MHz, but is "Performance Rated" at 200. Another interesting thing about it is that it refuses to run the v1.2 patch. Machine goes into a hard lockup and I have to turn it off to regain control. So, patch 1.1 remains on my POS.

I have almost convinced Luvlee that we need to upgrade though, so I am looking for a new machine in the next month or so.

Like everyone else, "I'm going to upgrade as soon as I can afford it!" I have a PII 266 tweaked over to 300. 96MB RAM a Sound Blaster 64 & a Number Nine Revolution IV 32MB video card. I have a 36X CD ROM and a 24X CDRW. Ihave 2 HDs- one 5 GIG and a 2 GIG. It's a full size case so I plane to go to the new Abit Mutha Board with at least 128MB PC 100 RAM and as hot a CPU as I can afford. I'll probably spend about $500-600 but it's cheaper than a new machine for say, $1000-1300.
EAW and Mig Alley run well on it but on EAW I use the CD crack and the End It All utility that ends non essential TSR programs so I have no hesitations AT ALL!

Celeron 433 not overclocked (yet), Win98, DX7a. 128 Megs Ram. Maxi Gamer Phoenix PCI 16 megs VRAM (thats a Voodoo Banshee). A s**tload of fans inside and venting to cool things off.

48X cd-rom. That's all I can think of. It runs EAW and Mig Alley quite well, which are the only two flight sims I have at the moment.

Well, mine is a homebuilt, Micronics MB, AMD K-6 200 CPU, 128MB RAM, and Blaster 16MB TNT card. Frame rate is okay except when low over a city or when too many smokers fill the sky.
Within the next month or so I'll replace this setup with an FIC MB, AMD K6-2 450, 128MB PC100 RAM, and a new TNT2 card. I like to roll my own, but generally stay a generation behind the bleeding edge of technology.
All the replaced components will migrate to my granddaughter's computer or one under contruction (from used parts) for my daughter. Recycle! Recycle!
BTW, this is a good way to justify new stuff for the main game box: "Well, dear, the tyke's computer is getting a bit creaky. I'll put this old video card and stuff into that one and buy a new (mumble, mumble) to go into mine. All right?"

Mine is:

Celeron 400 MHz
64 MB RAM (needs 64 more)
Riva TNT2 32 MB
Soundblaster Live! Value
40x CD-ROM
8,4 GB HD
Saitek X36 combo

Runs EAW smoothly in 1280x1024. Slows a bit down when the sky is full of a/c and flak. I just need more RAM, I think. Too bad it's so expensive now

Energizer, the black borders are usually a driver problem. The first thing you need to do is find out what your graphics card is. Try rightclicking on the My Computer icon on your desktop, select properties and click the Device manager tab. That should tell you what your card is.

TQM: That's strange about your system not being happy with 1.2, I had no problems with that. I wonder what is choking the system? I actually miss the old dog (my p200). I had been in and out of that box so many times tweaking it I think I could do it in my sleep. The Athlon screams though and you can put together a pretty fast system for not a whole lot of cash nowadays...

Criminey!!

You guys are making me feel like Daddy Warbucks, with the exception of Karnak.
I'm running,

PIII-500
128 Megs RAM
MaxiGamer Phoenix Voodoo Banshee card/16 megs
21 Gigs in two hard drives
16-bit sound card that came with it.
17" Viewsonic Monitor .24 Dot Pitch

I was gonna upgrade the speakers to a full surround system w/subwoofer, but the wife cried so much about loud killing sounds that I went to a good pair of headphones. Now she just has to WONDER why I have that devilish grin on my face all the time.

Two year old 333 mhz Dell with 128mb ram. I've been listening in on the discussions here and finally upgraded my trusty 4mb Riva 128 to a cheap 32mb OEM TNT2 and WHAT A DIFFERENCE! Finally being able to go over 800X600! And (ahem) while EAW at 1280X1024 is nice, Janes WWII fighters at 1280X1024X32 is amazing! I hit autopilot and external view and just stare. I can't imagine what B17-2 will be like. Frame rates are the same as with 800X600 with the old card. Next step will be a bios flash for that OEM intel motherboard, drop in a cheap Celeron (they are going up to 700 Mhz by June, apparently), and this student WILL be able to afford to run the new games! Sorry for all the exclamation marks, but I'd just about given up on being to afford worthwhile upgrades for the next few years. Three cheers for competition!

Yup, it is strange, and very reproducable. All I have to do is copy the eaw.exe from v1.2 into my EAW directory, and crash city. Copy back the v1.1 and it runs fine again.

Since v1.2 came out, I have tried DX 6.1, 7 and 7a, two different sound cards, a handfull of video drivers, (both Creative and NVidia), replaced the hard drive and reinstalled fresh copies of W98 and 98se.

Microprose tech support had me running two different installs, v1.1 and v1.2 and swapping files back and forth, they were stumped too.

I was spending so much time troubleshooting, I wasn't flying at all. Finally decided I could fly v1.1, or watch the machine lockup and have to reboot.

Right now it's a 17" monitor... (the wife wants a 19" after we had one for a week as a demo, so I think I'm gonna get lucky for my birthday )

56k external modem... although on dialup here in the country I usually only connect at 28.8 (but the stability of the connection is superb, so I usually don't have a lag problem)

Hewlett Packard Pavilion 400 pII with 96mb ram. 100mhz bus, built in ati rage turbo with
a voodoo II board hanging off with a monster sound 80 card to Yamaha speakers, very stable platform with eaw, but have not bumped up resolution. But ran Quake III at high res with great results so it should not be a problem to get to at least 800x600. Just got a 17" monitor my boss let me have from work..
(told him i was having trouble with the certification exams with my small monitor..he he he.)waiting for pci versions of voodoo 5 boards to come out.
