I just purchased a Guillemot 3D Prophet GeForce card.

I noticed on the installer CD, that it included DX7. There is no mention in the manual about whether or not it needs / should have DX7 installed.

Do I need to install DX7 to get the most benefit from the Prophet? Falcon 4 is my favorite, (most time spent on) application, and I know it doesn't like DX7. With my CL TNT1 card, I had to go through the long process of uninstalling DX7, reinstalling Win98.... and I shudder at the thought of doing that again.

I currently have the card operating with DX6.1, with Guillemot's 3.62 drivers.

I sent an email to Guillemot's tech. support email line, but who knows when that'll be answered.

Anyone able to help? Do I need DX7 for the GeForce?

Thx,
Scoob

If you want to use hardware transforms & lighting then you will need DX7. The only game I can think of which uses it right now is Quake 3, so I suppose if you're system works as it is then keep it as it is. Bit of a waste of a Ge-Force card though, to spend all that money and not use its features. Any possibility you can exchange it for a nice meaty (& cheaper) TNT2 card?

Ack!

Falcon crashes on me just before reaching the pie screen, after I commit to the mission, if I'm in D3D. Works fine with software, but crashes in D3D. Crashes 100% of the time!

Using 3.62 / DX 6.1.

Thoughts!!??!!

We're using the 7.a drivers with our Asus G Card. Also the drivers from Nvida. This card is better than 770u, ATI Rage 32, Elsa 32, or DM 12vs in SLI. Not quite the same frame rates but much better colours. We're playing everthing I can in 1600*1200. Just put an extra cooling fan blowing over the the one that comes on the board. We had a few problems with lockups but not now. Have'nt tried campaign @ this resolution yet though. The HUD is also unreadable because it's too small for my eyesight, so back to 1024*768 for now on F4.
FWIW,
Good Hunting!
Ps. I would not trade this card for anything just because of the major improvements over all others we had.

I managed to get Falcon to stop crashing with the 3D Prophet GeForce in D3D... I installed DX7.

This might just be the first recorded time that installing DX7 *stopped* a crash, instead of caused one.

Although I'm not crashing, with the same options turned on as I had with my TNT1 card, my framerates have either stayed the same, or decreased.

I'm quite disappointed.

3.62 / DX7 / 300A@450

My machine doesn't crash with Falcon 4. I have a P3600EB, 133mhz sdram and 3d Prophet Pro like yours and DX7a. Seems to be a good combination for this system. I am using Nvidia 3.65 video drivers also.

I ran some more tests, and I have come to the conclusion that the 2D cockpit is the major cause of low FPS.

I tried bumping the resolutions incrementally up, from 800x600 to 1600x1200, and found that my FPS were very acceptable in the #1 and #3 (non-2d cockpit) views, but went to hell in the #2 view.

For example, in the basic handling training mission...

800x600 #2 view - 28 < FPS < 40
1024x768 #2 view - 25 < FPS < 35
1600x1200 #2 view - 8 < FPS < 12

800x600 #1,3 view - 40 < FPS < 80
1024x768 #1,3 view - 35 < FPS < 70
1600x1200 #1,3 view - 35 < fps < 50

The 2D cockpit is by and large the source of poor D3D FPS.

In campaign mode, divide these FPS by about 3.

1600x1200 campaign #2 view FPS ~ 4
1600x1200 campaign #1,3 view FPS ~ 20
