It is one of the German pre-war air speed record breaking planes:

It is either
a) A Me-209 (Bf-109R)
or
b) Some Hienkel...I think it was an He-200.

Nope. It does have a Daimler engine though.

I am stumped.

I have what I consider good references and I cannot find this plane.
I looked in Axis and Aliied specific books and Jane's "Fighter Aircraft of WWII"
I looked in "also rans" and "might have beens" and "total losers" type books.

The Dutch had a very good fighter at the start of the war(D-XX or something) but I cannot find a picture of it
I do not think it is that one anyhow.

I am also a bit sceptical about that saddlebag intake setup behind the cockpit, I have never seen anything resembling that on a single engined WWII plane except the experimental Japanese pusher aircraft.

Please tell us, I am going crazy here and the only thing I can come up with is "COMPOSIT"

There seem to be Japanese, German and Russian components well put together.

End the mystery and my misery please?

The Dutch plane I referred to is the Fokker D.XX1 and is not it.

I'll leave it open for guesses for awhile.

I was completely unaware of this aircraft until very recently, so don't feel bad!

Like the "Me 109R" it was specially built for speed. It was not intended as a production fighter.

Its not a Me-209 (the cockpit isn't far enough back).

It could be a He-100 (an early version) but it also could be an early version of the Mitsubishi Rayden

It's not any kind of 109/209, and its not a variant of the He-100 (though it does look like one).

It reminds me of a Japanese? experiment I think a well versed friend told me about. It seems to be small, with very small wings, is it carried aloft by a larger plane for release as a point of need fighter escort?

It looks very much like the Raiden. I would dare say that it is a Mitsubishi design.

Well if it isn't a defence fighter then count the Raiden out. It is Mitsubishi I believe. Is it a test version of an aircraft or the final product?

It's not Mitsubishi, though it definitely has similarities to the Raiden, especially the "speedster" style cockpit.

Here's a Raiden. Cool plane.

I thought maybe some developement variant of the 309, as the wheels are wide track, but as far as I know the 309 had a tricycle landing gear setup...this is a lot tougher when the reference books are 1000 km away!

Not Me 109, 209, 309. It is Japanese.
Not a TA-152, though hopefully we'll have some T & A back on this board sometime soon...

Still Japanese...

Info so far...

It was a "high-speed research aircraft" powered by a Daimler Benz. It was not made by Mitsubishi.

I loaned out my copy of R.J. Francilon's excellent book which would enable me to give it's designation. I remember being smitten by the little beauty though.

Alright, made by Kawasaki, anyway. They did have the only licence built Daimler engines?

Kawasaki Ki-78

Details and a photo here: http://members.aol.com/pelzig/ki78.html

In fact, the whole Hikoki:1946 site http://members.aol.com/pelzig makes fascinating reading, as does the Aviation History web-ring (scroll down to the bottom of the main Hikoki:1946 page).

Dammit HarryM, do you know how many pages there are in the"Complete Encyclopedia of World Aircraft"?
A bunch and it was not there, guess they missed a couple, huh?

Thanks for the Challenge HarryM and thanks Judge for ending my futile search.

Congratulations, Judge!

Here's another image...

Great looking aircraft IMHO. It at least LOOKS fast, even though it didn't perform as well as hoped.

Glad you liked it Tobiwan, I'll have to start looking for another plane...

I was inspired by this naval site http://www.uss-salem.org/ They have something similar with ships, but I can never get them. Very obscure stuff!
