Why are there no listings for WWII fighters, and how does it compare to SDOE and EAW as far as F/M, graphics and playability?

Jane's WW2 graphics....

The cockpits are the most faithful representations to date and the planes look great from the outside too. The special effects are nice, especially the smoke, explosions, and muzzle flashes... some might consider them to be overdone, however. The sky and clouds are great looking.
The terrain is awful, though. Except for a few areas of patchy snow, most of the terrain is blanketed with a repeating texture.... almost no variation. You'll feel like you're flying your wonderfully rendered WWII plane over some strange alien landscape.

I play WWII Fighters almost everyday. The AI is very good and I don't mind the terrain graphics.
It would be nice to have something like "air Base Attack" (remember Fighters Anthology?)for the multiplayer.
What I like most is that you can actually perform an emergency landing without killing the pilot - you don't get that in many flight sims as far as i know.
It's a shame that even Jane's seem to put this sim aside...I can only dream of a Pacific WWII fighters....
I can't compare it with EAW as I just ordered it - but compared with CFS - I think it's better at least where gameplay is concerned; the AI is good, with a bit of tweaking of the settings you can get a good balance of fire accuracy and damage, you can create your own missions/campaigns, the FPS is better than CFS, but you do need a decent graphics card.
The game doesn't have a dynamic campaign, but some missions can be challenging enough.

No, WW2 Fighther's is not dead but it doesn't enjoy the luxury of having as big of a committed following as do EAW and to a lesser extent SDOE. CFS...can't say. Never tried it but it's got user created planes out the keyster.

The main reason why you don't (and won't) see as many postings for WW2F is because the way the sim is designed makes it very difficult to hack and do things like paint skins, add sounds, or modify terrain which is a very stong plus for EAW and SDOE. You pretty much have to take it "as is". I share a sentiment with all of the hardcore WW2F fans in that EA/Jane's has a fantastic engine on which to build more sims (WW2 Pacific immediately pops into my head) but they let it slip away and have moved on to other things.

That said, I think WW2F is damn cool. I love it and play it almost every day. With my new CPU upgrade (P3-650E) my days with WW2F have just been increased. With the right video card, a decent amount of memory (128megs) and fast CPU this sim is the most gorgeous WW2 sim you'll ever see. So don't let the silence cause you think the sim is dead becasue like SDOE, WW2F has its rabid fans as well.

Check this site out for lots of WW2F custom missions and campaigns (if you haven't already).

I still enjoy WWII Fighters. And the stark landscape actually adds to the somber winter immersion IMHO. The exterior a/c graphics and full time 3D cockpit are first rate, even by more "modern" standards (interestingly superior to Janes F/A-18). When it came out it was a cpu-humbler, but given 'current' processors from P3-450 on up it is fluid at 1024x760.

As far as eye candy goes, nothing can touch WWIIF. The terrain in mediocre but the trees are nice, they give a good low level feel. The planes are nicely done and the 3D cockpits are absolutely second to none. The mission builder is very good and the ability to create your own ground instalations/targets is fantastic. The air to ground action in this game is fabulous!

However, the FM sucks the bag and the landings are about as sophisticated as a Pong game from 1970. For A2A, it's CFS, for A2G, it's WWIIF.

I've been playing WW2 Fighters for over a year now, I've owned SDOE for 3 or 4 months, and just recently I went out and purchased CFS.
I'm hooked on CFS now. WW2 is a great game offline, however, the multiplayer lag is awful. It has all but ruined the game for me at this point. Jane's made alot of promises regarding upgrades to their server, but I haven't seen a single change during my time online with WW2.
The Zone on the otherhand appears to be making alot of improvements. I experience very little lag with CFS, and there is always dozens of games to choose from.
In short, if you only fly offline....go with WW2, if your an online enthusiast.....CFS is the way to go.

Hey DC,

If I see you on the Zone, I'll watch your 6. Combatsim backup if you would.

Hi, I play WW2 fighters very often and it is because of graphics, AI and possibility to see your target being destroyed in another target window. The last mentioned is fantastic feature. I haven't seen it enywhere else and can't understand why. All other props seem very cartoonish for me and I can't get the feeling 'being there'. I hope B-17 II wil change this.

WW2 Fighters is THE best prop sim available, period. I just can't comprehend why Janes is so brain dead and not issuing a Pacific theatre addition.

WW2F is great, I agree, the best adrenalin rush I ever had with a flight sim. My fevered
campaign is the 19 mission Luftwaffe campaign
called "Operation Grosse Drucken" on http://members.xoom.com/ww2f/ Jezus I get such a rush chasing those DAMN mustangs
in my Bf109, they are really pain in the *** ! P-38 is cigar, P-47 can be really hard too when you are sitting in BF109 without supporting cannons, but with FW190 it's alright. I get such a great feeling of accomplishement when I dogfight with 2 P51s and I nail them both but man a lot of times they ripp me to pieces and when they do it almost hurts ! I love that feeling, I can't wait to get 1Ghz Pentium with Ge256 64Mb video and really max out those graphics...I wish too that this engine got extended into say Battle of Britain or Pacific, imagine fighting those zeros with Wildcats...scarry stuff ! I think there could be light at the end of the tunnen since looking Glass is working on a flight sim WW2 together with Jane's so hopefully that will be the next king, until then I don't need anything else.

I love WW2F...

Peter

Peter;
I add my vote to yours."Operation Grosse Drucken"is a real masterpiece-challanging,varied,missions with lots of unexpected little touches.Anyone with this sim om their hard drive owes it to themselves to download and try this campaign.Another good one is "Jay's Campaign",an all Spitfire campaign.the creator,JJay,is working on a revised version of this one which should be ready real soon.
