Hi. Flight sim fan here who strayed from the "fold" and is trying to jump back into it :). I didn't play flight sims much at all in the last 3 years, but I'm equipped with my new Precision Pro and I'm determined to get caught up :). I'm loving MiG Alley and F/A-18, and I'm now looking toward a WWII sim, with EAW and WWII Fighters being my targets. With that, I have two questions:

I downloaded the WWII Fighters demo last night and it's *quite* choppy (in D3D) at 1024x768 with all details maxed out. F/A-18 runs fine at those levels, and I expected similar performance from WWII Fighters (or even better performance), but I'm getting nowhere hear it. The demo feels like an alpha or beta that hasn't been optimized yet. My question is... is the full version (or the full version patched to v1.08) any smoother? If it's not, then I don't want to waste my money on it. BTW, I have PII-450 with an AGP TNT.

Also, I noticed WWII Fighters is FAR more graphically detailed (clouds, terrain elevation, etc.) and immersive (music, gun blasts, damaged cockpit, crashing, mission set-up, etc.) than EAW. Is EAW (which I already plan to buy) so popular mostly just because of the campaign and easy modifiability? From the demos of the two, it seems like WWII Fighters is by far the superior "experience" (at least on a mission-by-mission basis.) Thoughts? I'm just trying to figure out why Jane's seems to totally outclass EAW, but EAW is considered the pinnacle (so far) of WWII flight sims.

Ah, heck... one more question. It seems as though Flying Corps Gold is *still* the best (just about only) WWI sim right now. I forget... does it support Win95 and 3D accelerators... and is there *any* place on online that sells it (I can't fight it anywhere)?

Thanks the answers!

This question has been asked many times, WWII Fighters or EAW, which should I get?

Well, the problem is there is no perfect answer. You already pointed the differences graphically, between EAW and WWII fighters. However they differ in number of planes available to fly, campaign structure, and user support.

In WWII fighters you can fly 7 planes. However, I find the campaign much more playable and there is a feeling that an actual war is going on. This is the only thing that EAW lacks, you'll find yourself flying the same missions over and over, and the campaign is not historically accurate.(D-Day occurring on May 16, 1944 for example).

Other than that, EAW is an excellent sim.

If you like graphics, sounds, and semi-dynamic campaings, get WWII fighters.

If you like long carrer following campaings with medals and pilot records, better FM, ability to change planes skins and terrain, and more planes to fly then get EAW.

Also, the AI in WWII fighters is more of a challenge than EAW, so you might also want to consider that too.

My suggestion would be to get both. I think they are both running 19 bucks or so. Both are excellent.

The final release of WWII Fighters runs _much_ faster than F/A-18 on my system, Celeron366@458, 128MB, V3 2000. In F/A-18 with terrain set near and some detail levels turned down, I get sub-10 fps in campaign. In WWII Fighters with all detail high (except clouds, which are a framerate killer; if you have them enabled, turn them off), I get average framerates in the 30s.

For the record, EAW has a dynamic campaign in which your mission results affect the progress of the war. This is the reason for the historically inaccurate timing of D-Day. You did so well in your campaign that D-Day was moved up a couple of months.

S.

By the way, Electronics Boutique is carrying a flight sim package with Jane's F-15, Jane's WWII Fighters and Novalogic's Comanche bundled for around $20. The only downside is that F-15 doesn't come with a manual. However, if you're looking to buy WWII Fighters, this is probably the best bargain you'll find.

Judge, I recently bought that software bundle you spoke about in your post. Is the manual that comes with WW2F in that bundle the same manual that comes in the real WW2F box?

P.S. Are you saying to turn off all clouds, or just the 3d ones?

Thank you

Good Hunting

Tom,

turn off the 3D clouds. Its ok to leave the colud layers on, bu for some reason, those 3D jobs absolutely kill framerate.

IMHO EAW is better if you want to play online, and want an overall more challenging flight model. However, to me anyway, torque effects and the feeling you're flying a heavy aircraft is better in WW2 fighters. The FM is relaxed otherwise with no real spins(only snap rolls)and no acceleration stalls. I tried WW2 fighters online, and you must need a really good connection to play, because it's very warpy, but EAW is smooth. I hear SDOE is pretty good and cheap now, so you may want to check that out--I know I will. The search for the perfect flight sim must go on!

heheheh EAW and JanesWWIIFighters are both good sims - but why bother with WWII kites
Get RedBaron 3D - the graphic add-ons, damage models graphic enhancements, campaign manager ALL FREE and make the a whole new WWI sim. Geez with people spending hundreds and thousands of dollars on computers and periperials get EAW WWIIFighter an RB3D - you can get all three sims for a total of less then $80.00 if you shop around - and none of them disappoint - I own all 3 and never regreted I bought them.

GET'UM ALL!

Thanks for all of the replies (especially Lucky and Judge.) I know about the many comparisons between the two games, but I was so amazed at the first-hand "surface" differences between the two that I had specific questions I needed answered.

Judge, thanks... it must be the clouds that are making it choppy for me. They're so pretty; I'd hate to disable them... but I guess I'll have to. Also, I am in fact looking to buy that 3-game pack. I saw it at CompUSA for $20.

To those that are wondering, I *am* thinking of buying both, since they're so cheap... but their price isn't really the point. I'm trying to figure out which one to play. I'll need to decide on one or the other, since switching between playing each won't get me very far or good in either :). I devote myself to games, so I'm trying to decide which of the two sims will be "my WWII sim" :). Just buying both isn't an answer for me.

Thanks for the help so far. It looks like I may need to buy both before I can make a decision. Please continue adding insight, though.

One other thing to consider Osprey is that EAW appears to be upgrading and adding on consistently. Those of us who have been flying Jane's for a long time haven't seen an upgrade in a long long time. Jane's has all but forgotten about one of their absoulute best games ever, while MS continues to add on and grow.

Man Lucky, get a map and put down the beer. I'm originally from Philly and even I know that I'm 3-4 hours southwest of you (below Nashville). Better yet, drop the beer off here.......
