On two occasions in mission(s) in Matt's Vahalla campaign, I've had a problem with the GBU-29. Most recently, in my 13th mission from the beginning of the Valhalla campaign, it was my task to destroy a building (I believe it was a power factory building), for which the detailed preflight briefing for the mission said that 2 GBU-29 bombs were required for successful destruction of the building. I set the bombing mode to PB and selected DMPI-1 as the target, and I dropped the 2 GBU-29 bombs presumably on the target when the In Range cue was present, but according to the post-flight stats and debriefing, I failed the mission and only destroyed 2 smokestacks, even though I dropped the required 2 GBU-29s when the In Range cue was present.
This same problem happened to me once before in Matt's campaign (I believe in the same mission).

I know bombs don't always hit and destroy their targets, but I had always thought that GBU-29s were exceedingly accurate when dropped according to the required parameters (with which I seem to have complied).

Any ideas as to what, if anything, I was doing wrong (I was flying very low--at an altitude of, I believe, around 1000 feet, more or less--when I dropped the bombs on both occasions)? Is it just the vicissitudes of war or could it be a glitch in the mission/campaign? Has anyone else noticed this as a problem?

Thanks.

I have noticed that if you get in very close at high speeds the bomb will fall a bit long even though you have a good release cue. I just pop a bit farther out now and pickle as soon as I see the solution. If you are inside of a mile or two my experience is the bombs may not hit. A pop from about 4-5 miles will give the bomb enough time (or the sim ) to figure out the flight path. I think that is all it is.

I agree...

Anything that is free-fall guided needs some altitude and distance to make the proper adjustments to hit the target.

Droppig one from low altitude makes it act more like a dumb bomb.

it could also be of course that if you have a factory and there are smokestacks on the side you are coming from, if you drop the bobms at the right moment, and they go for the target, but they just come from so low that they hit the smokestacks "blocking" the factory, if you know what I mean. One of my wingmen did this in Total Air War yesterday...

Good point, guys. I think you solved my problem. When I was approaching the target I was very low and did not "pop up", and I was in very close when I released the bombs.

One question: When you pop up, what altitude do you go up to when you release the bombs?

Thanks all.

For LGB's I like to be around 10,000 feet or above to stay out of most AAA fire as you fly level for so long while the bomb is guiding.

For GPS bombs, above 5,000 feet to give them room to maneuver.

A few days ago I saw it on one of my shelves with software boxes and I thought, oh what the heck, my machine aint good but it's fine for TAW! So I played it a bit the past few days. It's kind of, well, easy, haha, well not easy, but more simple avionics... What I love is the atmosphere. Coming back from a CAP bagging a number of Flankers and Fishbeds over Somalia, taxiing to a parking spot and as you taxi, you see two French Mirages take off! It's just a sight to see. And the ramps, maaan, they're crowded! Also at the enemy's too, hahah I love to go guns on them!

Anyway, I have ben doing some TAW past couple o days.Too bad I cant create my own campaign, you know, say friendly nations and enemy nations and assign aircraft. Do you know if there is a utility such as Super Revive for EF2K, I always found that one nice to make your own kind of scenario...

Wow, lenghty post... hehe ciao!
