Hi Matt!! Been a long time!

As soon as I heard word you released your own campaign, I immediately re-installed F-18, went quickly through the training as a refresher and dove in.

What a great job you did on it but I lost the damn thing by having the CVBG get wasted by the Red Russian naval group. I finshed every mission up to the SEAD strike on the SAG successfully, got lots of kills and was shot down once(ejected safely) and watched good ole Sandy come resuce me from the frigid waters...nice touch I hadn't seen before.

I did poorly in the SEAD role for the alpha strike on the RR SAG and in the next one me and my flight downed 14 of the incoming SSMs and then I just flew around waiting for the SSM strike to end...but it didn't, volley after volley of Sandbox's and Sunburn's kept coming at the CVBG until it was sunk. I diverted to the mainland but the campaign ended there.

I figure the key is in the SEAD strike to get more RR ships or are we able to land and rearm on the ship durring the SSM strike.

How did you guys do with it?

It was great fun and made re-installing JF-18 a joy.

Is there a way to save it in progress and be able to refly a mission?

I have started again and just downed the A-50, so the big tester is getting close again!

Thanks for the great work Matt and also to the guys that helped you on it!

Matt, please send me an email... shepskii@home.com

Yup, it has been a long time Mark! I hope you're doing well, and I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the new campaign. Actually, I've been playing a lot of F2 (2.03a) lately.

If you keep a few things in mind, these SEAD support missions should be cake for a pro like you:

1- Make sure you push far enough ahead of the 'poon shooters to give your SEAD flight time to remove the SAG's AD threat. By the time the 'poons starting flying, the SAG's AD umbrella should have lots of holes in it. If not, the SAG will have little problem in downing the 'poons.

2- Use your wingmen. Once within 35 nm of the SAG, order your wingmen to attack air defenses. Although they will keep attacking until their weapons are depleted, if you repeat the attack air defense order after they all have called magnum, it will increase their fire rate.

3- As for your targeting, first go for the illuminators ("10", "11", and "8") between 25 and 30 nm out. Without these, the ships are helpless. After that go for the search radars ("NS"). Don't worry about the surface search ("SS") radars as these are only used for ship-to-ship engagements.

If you get engageed by an SA-N-6 ("10") during the engagement, hit the deck, put the SAM on the beam, put the music on, and release chaff. Unless you're awfully close to the radar, that should break the lock. Also, every radar in the game has a minimum detection altitude. If you can get below it you're safe. However, the ship-borne systems have very low minimums.

If you give yourself enough time and use your wingmen, the 'poon shooter flights should have no problem getting shots in. I believe only one or two ships need to be sunk for the mission to be a success.

Hope that helps.

Matt

Thanks for the quick reply Matt,

I think my problem with the SEAD run was that I fired the HARMS soon after they appeared on the SMS page rather then waiting and use SP mode. I find it's no problem useing ECM, beaming, and chaff when needed to defeat incoming SAMs but with all the beaming the interceptors get a chance to move in.

I flew the campaign again from the start and in the "A" Strike mission I was tasked as a strike flight. I took SLAM-ER's with me and a flight of 8 and got all my AGMs on the Slava and it burned hard but didn't sink. My flight didn't get any Harpoons on target so I guess I'll see if the Slava was damaged enough take away it's SSM threat...

Gulp...

Cheers,

Mark

Related to my post above, if you're tasked as a 'poon shooter for such a mission, make sure you give the SEAD flights plenty to time to work over the SAG's AD. If not, many of your flight's shots will be in vain.

Stinger, regarding your post on 12/1/00 at 12:13 AM where you asked whether there was a way to refly a mission: I have found in the campaign that comes with the game that if you turn off your computer using its on/off button before leaving the post-mission briefing screen, when you turn your computer back on and go back to the campaign, you will be set up to fly again the mission that you had just flown (however, any losses that you sustained during the previous attempt will be present when you attempt the mission again in the way I just described). I don't know if this works with Matt's campaign (I haven't tried it with that campaign).

Thanks Matt and Doc

Matt...please email me at shepskii@home.com

----------

I have seen a bunch of dated files in the resource dircetory that reflect my stage in the campaign. Will backing up any of them help me to refly a mission and if so, which ones?

I WILL beat that damn SAG!!
