When I try and install usaf the program either quits to desktop after the install sheild power bar goes to 86-100% or I get an error message (ie "could not initialize" or "fatal error ins_5576" or "unknown error") and then quits/crashes. I've done a clean install of windows 98/directx6.1, checked the "regedit" for usaf files, reinstalled drivers for my sound and video cards. The only thing I am unsure of is my cdrom drivers, x24 speed atapi ide drive w/default windows drivers, I think they must be 32 bit but am unsure. Thanks for any help.

I had the same problem, twice.

On the first instance, the CD was scratched. So, I took that one back and got another.

The second ocassion, I had the same problem that you had 86% ir so, and then it would stop. You have something on one of the CD's a program that you must run if you previously tried to install USAF. I think its called USAF_Repair.exe. Try running this, then installing.

The repair tool gives the message about searching the registry then either times out or crashes with an error message after a bit. I used regedit to search myself and could not find any usaf keys, I even fdisk'd and reformated my drive when I reinstalled windows and directx.
