..but it don't for some reason.

I'm having this strange problem that I can't figure out. I tried that tutorial mission that's included in the manual and all goes well until I go "outside" to check out my bomber.

The load screen comes up and after a delay the bomber appears against a green ground plane. But that's where the problem begins. The game just seems to stop with the hard disk light shinind red. The mouse pointer moves just fine but I can't ZOOM or rotate the view. This ALWAYS occurs.

Strangely enuff I have some feeling that this has something to do with the ground texture. For exmaple...the one time I tried the take-off mission the same problem occured. The interior of the plane got drawn, the pilots got drawn, the little info box got drawn, but at some point the thing just stopped. My guess is that it had something to do with the outside view.

I don't have any problems with missions that start in the air; but just today I was flying one of the gunner's missions and all was well for a while until looking out the side gunners window at one point I see just sky and the cloud layer below. But then the ground comes into view and things freezes again.

Guess my

850 Athlon
384 meg
WinME
DirectX 8.0
Geforce 256
MSI 6167 mb

system doesn't like this game..or the gmae doesn't like it. Anyone have any idea what's up? I close all programs when the game is run, my swap file is 400 meg, and I use CacheMaster.

Oh yes...one final clue. I was able to get back to the desktop several time and when doing a CRTL-ALT-DEL, I noticed that besides the game program running..there was a file called

~ef7194

Once I was able to click on this file and it brought me back to B17 and the plane on the ground (back in the tutorial mission). But now the texture that was suppose to be there was..not just the green. But it went away when I messed with the view a little.

Make sure you read the README file.

Also this is from Wayward ( the desginers of the game ) - try these steps.

0) You haven't read the readme file!

1) Virtual memory. Need at least a 400Mb swap file, as specified in the README file
Or allow Windows to manage it but make sure you have PLENTY of room on the relevant drive.

2) Windows drive too full - Free up some space! Windows can't grow it's swap file unless there is some room!

3) Graphics drivers:
Matrox G400 latest drivers are reported to have problems - go back a version
Nvidia GeForce - Use beta drivers 6.47
Voodoo 3000 - Use previous drivers dated 4th July
Everything else - Use latest drivers.

4) DON'T enable a3d unless the soundcard has aureal chipset. And get the Latest a3d drivers if you do. (See README)

5) DX8 compatibility with some video drivers. IF you have problems, get latest DX8 compliant video drivers, or revert to DX7a

6) DISABLE ALL POWER SAVING, SCREEN SAVING ETC and KILL ALL SCHEDULED TASKS.

If all else fails stop by the TROUBLE Shooting forum at www.bombs-away.net

What is that ~ef1794 thingy anyway? It stays on the systray even after quitting the game. As does an application named 'Game'. Besides , when I turn off the machine after quitting B-17II the HD seems to do something for minutes before the system shuts down.
When I startn up next time I see a message that Windows is updating the setup files (have a Finnish version of W98 so I don't know if 'setup file' is the correct term). Also there is a folder named ~ef1794 in the windows\temp folder. Swap file management?

Cheers,
Orangutan

I'd guess that it has something to do with ur DX8...

there where generel a lot of issues with the new Dx version...I hope when the next game forces me to install DX8, everthing will be fine with the fort.

And u might play around a little with the geforce settings, seeif u can find some topics about here...

yeah, and I suggest, if u havent done so, go over at www.bombs-away.net and post this one in the troubleshooting board...they can help u a lot, we only have the CTD problem and the geforce stuttering left there...most other have solved there problems.

good luck with this

I've seen those wierd things hanging around in the systray after exiting the game...gotta be part of the problem...almost like its not using the memory correctly or something...I'm used to games that use swapfiles slowing the system down whilst it is flushed after exiting but never wierd stuff left on the systray...oh and I think this game hates gforces....despite the fact that they were lauded as the thing to buy to run this game...did get less stutter with me v3 2000 pci :-(

Still a lovely game though.......

Done all that stuff. I must say though that I did get it to run ONCE after I posted the above message. I selected 800x600 32bit mode and turned off T&L. I made sure that all my graphic settings were set to "Balanced" in the game. Well guess what...the game got past the point where it was locking up and ran. But as if to laugh in my face, I got a CTD when I press the "C" key (to get to the compartment view) while in the pilot's seat.

Of course after that I couldn't get it to run again in that session. Sorry, but getting a game to run properly shouldn't be game in itself. Heck a game better be REAL good to expect people to go through a 12 step program to get it to work right.

Wayward is working on the CTD Problem.

Feel free to post your specs and results in this thread.

http://www.bombs-away.net/ubb/Forum14/HTML/000138.html

They are taking all of the postings to help come up with an answer to the CTD's.

Thanks,

Jordi

My system: Athlon 800, 256MB RAM, Dx8, Windows ME, Voodoo 5 5500. Had CTDs until I beefed up my swapfile. Now all is fine, only just returned from a 4 hour realtime-mission.

Yep thats true....there is a tendancy for people to be what could be called "on message" when it comes to replies about technical probs with this game. There is nothing more patronising than someone telling you to read the manual or read the read me when its obviously a COMMON problem you are having. I'm all for people towing the party line as it were; when replying to questions...but its been two weeks and the same problems are still cropping up.....so heres some advice

IT'S A GREAT GAME BUT A BIT WONKY AT THE MO....HOLD ON TIGHT AND WAIT FOR THE PATCH...IF THERE AIN'T NO PATCH LINE UP BEHIND ME IN THE QUEUE FOR THE B17 2 BONFIRE PARTY.....

Any1 else miss plummerx?....bombs away has him now....poor souls...this place is far more civilised since he went (pushed) :-)
