I was at the ECTS2000 show yesterday (Sun 3)
and had a long talk with Iain Howe, of Wayward Design, first of all the sim is 90% completed and they(Wayward) have the end of September slated as the release date, this would also tie in with the dates EB have on there release sheets. Iain gave me a full demo of the sim, which is amazing, everything you heard about B-17 is true, from AI to damage model it's all there and the graphics !wow! they had it running on a p3-1000mhz with a gforce card using T&L, the amazing thing was on the machine Iain gave me the demo on it was only running at 640*480
and still looked better than other sims running at higher res.
We also discussed the omission of multiplay from the final release which has disapointd many people, me more than most as I run a Cybergame Cafe and B-17 was going to be one of our main attractions......but after talking to Iain I can understand that there comes a time when a decision has to be made, and as B-17 was a year overdue anyway and the investment already way past budget, and there was at least another 3 to 4 months work to complete it....well it does'nt take a genius to realise that Hasbro would make the decision they did.
I for one WILL buy the sim, it's a work of art.

Excellent news! Wow a 1000 mhz system, I just hope it runs good on my P3/600, 256 ram, & Geforce DDR. I have been waiting for this sim for a long time and I for one, am glad to see it finally near completion. From the movies I have seen, this sim should still be very well worth the purchase. However, if indeed they only had about 4 months to go to complete the MP feature, then this is a rather bitter sweet pill to swallow. I will still purchase this sim because like I said, it will still have alot to offer, but just think how incredible MP would have been. Oh well.

Wonder why they have it running in 640*480 in such a top of the line machine ?

Something doesn't sound right. If it's 90% completed how is it expected to be released in September?? The last 10% is normally the most difficult, not to mention they have to allow for testing - which takes many weeks, possibly months.

Normally when a game is within a few weeks of it's release, it's essentially code complete. Mainly just QA issues at this point. If they are physically still adding code at this point, then they must allow for an adequate testing phase, and they are running out of time for a September release - asuming they want a bug free product.

Doesn't add up does it.....

Neither does the quote by Wayward that it will run "At a playble framerate on a P200."

Sounds like more ******** to me.

Wait a minute. I've got a computer less than a year old (PIII/450 Voodoo3 blah, blah) and its not going to be able to handle this thing? THAT'S what's going to kill sales. And they were talking about playing MP over a 56k modem? You've got to be kidding me.

Excuse me, but to make a end of Sept release date it would need to be in final release canidate testing & very close to going "Gold", not only 90% done.

After JF-18 (took 900mhz/310mb Ram to get where I wanted it) a sim that takes a 1000mhz machine with a top line vid card to get good preformance at 640X480 scares the crap out of me.

They sure did not show it at 640X480 unless the very well were forced to, because they knew it would be all over the message boards.

Yeah, your darn right it doesn't add up. Based on the polygon count of the animated crew - not even including the other aspects of the game - there's no way a P200MHZ system is going to deliver decent framerates unless you turn every detail down to minimum and run at 640x480. Might as well play the original on the Commodore Amiga if you have to butcher it like that to play the game.

If you then add in an entire flight of bombers, escort aircraft, and a sky full of attacking planes with realistic tracer fire, that 200MHZ "playable" system will slow down to a slideshow.

Now, as far as them being 90% complete with a little over three weeks to release date, I think they are fooling themselves. It's not going to happen. I've yet to see in my entire lifetime a developer finish up a title in only 3 weeks when they haven't even hit Beta testing. Something definately wrong here.

For this game to make a September release, it needs to go Gold within the next week to 10 days max.

Great googly moogly, it runs fine on a 1ghz machine??!?! I just recently acquired a PIII 866mhz, and havn't even built the darn thing yet. Hopefully if i do get this game, my Geforce 2 can take it on.....must pray.=P

You guys are right about the release date being to ambitious. I havn't heard any beta release blah blah. If it is 90% complete as of this post, i personally would just sit back, let people get the game first, and let the reviews come in before i get this game. I was fooled once by Gunship. Not gonna be fooled again. It was a good, game, but unfinished in my own opinion. Here's hopin though.

Just FYI, I think your reading to much into the 90% comment. Wayward confirmed at the launch party in the UK that Beta had been reached, ie. no new code to be added 4 days before (roughly Aug 20). The press who saw the product only saw one Blue screen of death in an hours demo.

I understand it is being optimised at the mo (comment from Wayward at ECTS) and the mentioned date of end September is most probably the targeted gold date with a release early/mid October.

This is all only my opinion gleaned from reading a lot of posts, press comments from the launch and comments now coming back from ECTS.

Guy's,
I was reading other post (at Bombsaway site) from people who were also at ECTS2000 show. I think Nufsed maybe a little excited (I would be too if I got a full demo of the game!), all post at Bombsaway stated screen res as 1024x768. Maybe if there were problem's (read that computer's were locked up in boxes, also very hot there) it may have been heat related to the video card overheating. If Nufsed did see it in 640x480 this maybe why.

Allow me to clarify the res question, I saw the B-17 demo running at 640*480 because that is what Iain was running it at, at the time I also saw it running on the other machines they had there in 1024 or higher.
The only reason I got excited about the 640*480 was because the graphic quality was so high......there happy now....

Allow me to clarify the release date! The stand said OCTOBER, not September!!

And it meant the END of that month, not the beginning.

Cheers,

Iain

Iain,

Can we count that as an "official" release date?

He shows up just to clarify the release date, after dodging all the questions surrounding the game. Maybe he should have stuck around for a few more minutes and answered some. I realize he can't just say what he wants, but he could at least tell us what he can. Good luck in buying a game that will have no user support, no bug fixing, no future patches, etc.

In a very recent preview (Sept 6, 2000)Stephen Butts of ign.com says this about B17II:

"The game is still worlds away in terms of completion"

Yikes!! I'm rather concerned about this comment since Wayward claims the game will be released in October. If it's "worlds away from completion" what kind of a product are they expecting to ship in October?

You can read the review here: http://pc.ign.com/previews/14238.html

Robbster,
Please stop and check your sources before you post. The line you picked was not from the Sept 6th review, but from the March 6th review.

You know it is kinda funny how Iain from Wayward posted one reply and nothing else. Sounds fishy to me that he was on this same chat forum and no others that i have been on about B17II. All the guys are right that the something does not add up about B17II. One of the biggest things is Hasbro Posting it on it's website as a new release. They did that with Gunshit! Look at anyother software developer's page, if they have something new and state of the art you bet they will show it off as much as they can. The only way that B17II is really being previewed is to show up once in a while in gaming magazines, the loyal B17II websites how many are official sites is hard to say. I am very impressed with the detail yes, but with the rumours or truths of wayward being bought by a competeing software developer what are the chances of updates and support like others have said? The mp was a strong point to the game and it will be missed. My self if i do purchase B17II it will be from a bargain bin for 20 bucks instead of paying 60 for it and that is only provided i hear good things about B17 with no major bugs.

Oddly, Ian does exist....

but to prepetuate the conspiracy theory. Hasbro/Wayward made official announcements of things at events that are far away, and that not too many people from the forums have been to. Maybe, Ian is a imaginary figure, who actually is a hasbro rat, who is trying to make people belive that this game is real. He also logs in as the occassional person who says they've been to these marvelous events. Maybe, Ian actually is a martian.

Better yet, he abducted people in a flying machine and brought them to the moon made of cheese.

Frankly people, the world isn't a conspiracy. There is no man behind the curtain, no arch villian. Hasbro did cut MP, and probably won't patch it. Maybe, some diehard fans will make a patch, or a B17-IIa version, like they are doing to Homeworld (ie: Catacylsm).

Buy it or not, the game will come out, with some bugs, with some problems and probably some addiction.

I am really mad there is no MP, and have been waiting over 1 year for the games release, and dreamt of a game like this for years, but really, life moves on. I drank my beer over it's loss, but now I'm on to other things.

You won't see this game out untill at least December, I bet. Looks like all the waiting for me may be for nought. No way I can handle this sim on my meager P2 350. I might have to spend $2000.00 or more to run this $50.00 game. Lots a luck.
