There's a lot of discussion on what constitutes a dynamic campaign. My definition of a dynamic campaign is any series of missions that are determined by the events of the missions before them. My definition of a static campaign is any series of missions that run to a tightly linear script. B-17 has two Campaigns. In Bomber Commander, the AI analyses the current war priorities for the 8th Airforce and plans a campaign visiting the highest priority targets. Allowances are made for milkruns, of course, and for rest periods to avoid burn out. If a target is not devastated, then it remains on the target list. If this target is a tough one, that means your chances of drawing it (and therefore a tough mission) are increased. So it's best to do the job right first time.
In Squadron Commander, the player PLANS his own missions - which is surely the broad definition of dynamic. The squadron goes where he orders it, but if he visits inappropriate targets, or in other ways fails at his job, he'll be removed. This leads to two very different campaigns - one focused on getting 10 guys through a tour of duty and back home again, and the other focused on running the best squadron in 8th Army Airforce. The claims that our campaign is not dynamic come about because we've chosen NOT to directly affect the course of the war (i.e D-day happens earlier or later, the Germans win or whatever). We avoided this because we wanted to try and keep the feel of the campaign as realistic as possible. One mans part in the war is small - even one squadrons part. The player will be updated regularly on the progress of the war, after D-Day he'll view the Front Line as it rolls across Europe (obviously affecting his strategy - no more quick trips to France!) and we think this leads to a more immersive experience. Iain and others, Well the campaign sounds pretty good to me if not fully dynamic. I am having a blast with Jane's F-18 and it is not a dynamic campaign either. Any way you look at it, no one can call the B-17II campaign linear. Also, the fact that MP was dropped does not bother me. I rarely fly on-line basically because of the time constraints that I have in my life. I consider single player the first and foremost part of any sim. If that doesn't work, I won't pay. I do not know the reasons for dropping MP, but it is moot with me. I realize that some people live and die for MP. However, I am greatly looking forward to a sim that will allow me to take different positions on a bomber and allow me to fly different planes. Very cool!! If Wayward is focusing on making the single player even better and more unique then I admire them for having the guts to drop MP. On the other hand, if they dropped it because Hasblo said, do so or else, I will try to severly limit my purchase of Hasblo products. At any rate, finish the product and clear out the bugs. If Wayward can give me a bug free (relatively) product that works as advertised then I will be happy. I want to support sims as much as possible and now that Razorworks has proven itself I am hoping that another British company can deliver a winner also.
