Ok, I'm not kidding. Here's the Izvestia story: http://www.izvestia.ru/izvestia/article/232207

Here's the British paper story: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/et?ac=003819455505390&rtmo=QwHHaSaR&atmo=rrrrrrrq&pg=/et/00/11/15/wbuz15.html

It's a short article, so here it is:
RUSSIA revived the spirit of the Cold War yesterday with claims that its military pilots had "buzzed" the American aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk in the Sea of Japan.
Russian reconnaissance and fighter planes swooped low over the ship after evading its battle group's radar systems three times over recent weeks, the Moscow media boasted.

Not only did the planes, operating in pairs, feign an attack on the aircraft carrier, but they were able to take detailed photographs of what was happening on its deck, claimed press reports. Such "duels" were common in the Cold War.

Izvestiya commented: "If these had been planes on a war mission, the aircraft carrier would definitely have been sunk." Only after a second pair of Su-24 and Su-27 planes buzzed the Kitty Hawk on Oct 17 did the carrier scramble an F/A-18 fighter to intercept the intruders, the Interfax agency reported.

Any comments?

T Rex

PS I'm not a usual here, partial to F4 myself, but thought ya'll would find it interesting!

I dunno but I personally think it is BS. Why wasn't their the usual E-2 and F-14 cover (which is supposed to be there whenever an carrier is out of US waters) around??? There isn't anywhere to hide from an E-2 over the ocean. And why did they scramble only 1 F-18?? Shouldn't it be several F-14s?

"Izvestiya commented: "If these had been planes on a war mission, the aircraft carrier would definitely have been sunk."

And if it had been a war mission the CBG would of definitely shot at them...

There are some interesting discussions about this in the Current and Jets forums.

Besides the fact that the Cold War is supposed to be over, so if this is factual, it just means we had no intention of firing, nor where we even worried about the alleged aircraft.
It would seem the pilots were simply having a good time, and were probably cleared to do a flyby, otherwise they would be sitting at the bottom of the Sea of Japan right now.
The Soviets are convinced of their own superiority, and seem to think we can't counter their pretty new Su's and MiG-29's, but I guarentee you we can, without a problem.

There are about 600 fighters in Russia. And only 60% of them are operational... What do you think? =) I bet they are really convinced. And almost all of their Su-27s & MiG-29s are the earlist models (from the 80´s). They have virtualy no later models of Flanker (30,33,34,35,37). Not to mention
that most of thir pilots fly less than 10-20 hours a year. Some don´t fly at all... Althought they have some kind of elite in air force how fly hudreds of hours.
