I have spent about 20 hours in Flanker 2 so far and love it! The only real problem I have with it is the inability to padlock incoming missles. I had become adept at spoofing missles a realistic percentage of the time in F4, F15, F18 Korea and others but this one is tough. The big thing is I need help picking up the incoming missle. I try to know where the bandits are and know to look at my threat indicator but it is still to hard to see and avoid.

Ditto - my number 1 request for "added features" patch!

Just an observation - is it likely that one would be able to visually spot a missile 25cm wide and 2m long travelling at supersonic speed before it actually reached you?

Does it have a smoke trail?

LarsFosdal:

Just an observation-- is it likely your ground crew would strap two cardboard papertowel tubes to your eyeballs and ask you to fly into combat? No, but that's what flying a computer on a 17", two-dimensional monitor is like. A misslie padlock is simply a way of making up for the fact that you can't rapidly swing your head around and view the world with 20/10 vision, like a real combat pilot would. We suffer enough handicaps in the feedback/interface department while "flying" on a computer; additional limitations are not needed, thanks.

Larfosdal,

No, see, that's the problem! For me, its very unlikely (so far anyway).

I have no idea whether a real pilot can visually track a missile during various light conditions and at what distances, but someone else here might know?

Assuming he can't - if a pilot cannot rely on visual detection of missiles in real life, will it improve the realism of our simulation if we can?

I believe they would normally gain a tally on the missile by spotting the smoke trail.

L,

I know what you mean, 'if its not realistic, why add it?' But man it is always so tough to hear that missle launch warning and not be able to pick it up using the pan view. I would assume that a real pilot would have a better chance of seeing it, since they base their avoidance techniques on that.
I don't know how hard it would be to add, but it's something we can easily choose NOT to use if we don't want to. I'd rather see that that 1/2 a dozen outside views, which are cool, but hardly realistic either.

Go here and download the tracks to see how to use the 3D cockpit to get a tally on the missiles and evade.

With regards to spotting the smoke trail from the missile, this would have to be done within a visual range of the plane/SAM, due to the short burn time of most missile boost motors.

(unless Flanker 2 models missile contrails at altitude.)

I would like a true glance back to forward view command placed in F2 when one is in Padlock/Track mode.

Like the glance forward command included in F4.

This would definitly be included in my super mix fix list.
