After reading this CNN article: http://cnn.com/2000/ASIANOW/east/03/03/taiwan.china/index.html i began to wonder what would happen if for whatever reason (via election of a more government sympathetic to reunification, or military action of China to take back Taiwan, what would happen to all our military equipment that we sold to Taiwan? All in the hands of the Chinese govt? Would it be a good thing for them to have access to those destroyers, our missiles, etc.?

Anyways, just some thoughts...I know there are other alternatives to not selling at all...but...

We would obviously have to destroy such technology in the Taiwanese hands.

Just like the british destroyed the german captured french fleet in harbor at the start of WWII.

Personally, I'd give Taiwan statehood. Just to force China into a confrontation they cant win.

Hmmmmmm....now here is an idea....just see if you can follow it..............Taiwan is tossing around big dollars to anyone who will recognise them.....so...I declare my house an independant state....get Taiwan to pay me the bucks so that I can say "Yes you are a grown-up now" then I will have lots of money!!!! Is there a catch?

To be quite honest, I don't think that Taiwan will claim independence as that would throw Taiwan into war with China, according to chinese policy. That would definately not be a smart move, 'cause the chinese army could wipe'em out in a matter of hours...
And how would the US react if that happened?

"The Chinese would wipe them out in hours..."
Without the use of Nuclear weapons the actual convential forces that the chinese would be able to project across the Taiwan straight is actually quite limited:- Why else the desire to lay their hands on more up to date Russian equipment:- Mig 29`s etc plus also attempts to aquire a Russian CV.

The Brits didn't destroy the French fleet a Tolon in WWII. The French Navy sunk their ships (3 battleships, think 5 cruisers, several destroyers and subs) when the Germans start invading their base... only 3 subs scaped... two to Argel and one ran out of fuel, going to Spain.

I think the Taiwanese would do the same.

PS: Sorry 'bout my bad English B-)
