I need some help guys!

I am looking at buying a new machine very soon,(like, in the next few weeks), and have NO idea of what card to put in it. I have been out of the loop for a few years now. To give you an idea, my current machine is a Pentium 166 with 80MB RAM, and a Diamond Monster 4MB (all chiseled from the finest stone age granite available to man!!)...you may all laugh..NOW!!

I am looking at getting a mid-high end Pentium III (around the PIII 800 mark- give or take a little), with a bare MINIMUM of 128MB RAM. Although a variety of games will be used on it, it will be almost exclusively for flight sims.

Oh, and I'm afraid that by having had little exposure to the industry for the last three years or so, I'm not really up on all the technical stuff, so it would be appreciated if you could keep it fairly simple, so that a dimwit like me can understand!! I dont have craploads to spend on the card, so I'm looking at around A$200 (thats roughly US$390-400).

All the help you guys can give me would be fantastic! I'm sick of playing the likes of EAW on my mates machine. I wanna play it on mine!!!

Ta

Either the GeForce 2 or the Voodoo5. There have been endless debates on the subject (just do a search here and you'll see what I mean). The general concensus is that the GF2 is faster overall but that the VD5 does a better job of full scene anti-aliasing (FSAA - cleans up jagged edges/lines). Note: if you plan to run sims at or above 1024x768 FSAA becomes less of a factor.
Bottom line: you can't go wrong with either.

Cool

I sort of figured it would probably be between either of those two, but with all the jargon and the plethora of cards around, its all just a little confusing!!

Thanx mate!!

I'd say pick yourself up a ATI Radeon 64MB VIVO, or GeForce 2 GTS 64MB.

That's if I was recommending to someone else....I always go with the underdog, as they do everything to win over their customers if their product isn't the best. 3DFX has life time warranty.

So I, myself, would pick up a V5 5500. I just love mine to death...especialy at 1024x768....check out my screenshot
