Hey, all...Well, since my order for a V770-Ultra was delayed until MAY by buy.com (and everyone else is out, as well), I'm shopping around again. My question is this: What is the difference between a TNT2 and a TNT2 Ultra? Is it worth the price difference? A little background: My system is a P2-333, 128 MB RAM, and I play F4, EAW, USAF and various EA Sports games. Thanks in advance...

I'm gonna get ripped if this isn't right, but I believe the difference is the speed at which the core and memory is clocked. It's higher in the Ultra version. It seems that the general opinion is that since you can usually overclock non-ultra boards to ultra speeds, it's not worth the extra scratch. I recently upgraded from a 16meg TNT1 to a 32meg TNT2 Ultra. It made a much bigger difference in both speed and image quality than I had expected. Looks great and man is it fast. The card I bought is the Xentor 32 from Guillemot. It's a real solid board. Installation was a snap and Guillemot offers a simple overclocking utility called Powersprinter(or something like that). I'm still experimenting, but it's been stable at 180mhz core and 195mhz memory. I think only the Hercules Dynamite ships at higher speeds than the Xentor 32. Combatsim has a review of this card in the hardware section. Check it out.

I've got the same system specs and I just ordered a TNT2 non ultra (OEM Diamond V770) from stupidcomputers.com. The price has come down to 130.00 Cdn w/rebate, or 84.50 US. It has the same 32MB Ram as the Ultra and the Pro, and is just clocked down a bit, so I thought it was a good deal to upgrade from my Riva 128. The TNT2's to avoid are ones with the M64 chip, which are choked a bit internally with a smaller memory bus.

DBond is correct about the differences in the standards vs. the ultra cards. Essentially the ultra cards have the higher quality chips on them. nVidia like intel and other chip manufacturers test their chips to a 'spec'. The chips that run fast and stay below a certain temp at a given voltage are rated as 'ultra' while the ones that fail the test fall into the 'standard' category. Also on some of the boards like the Xentor the memory is of a faster higher quality allowing for the overall higher speeds those boards run 'out of the box' in general.

Note, I too upgraded from a TNT1(V4400) to a TNT2U(Xentor32) and while it did work some miracles in Unreal Tournament and a few other games, the upgrade did nothing for ANY of my flight sims.

system specs:
cel366@550 running 2.0 volts(runs very cool)
Abit BH-6 MB
256 meg PC 100(samsung)
Xentor32 TNT2U(not OC'd),3.69 drivers
V2 sli, DX6 drivers
DirectX 7.0a
Win98(non SE)
32x Mitsumi CD Rom
I.O. Magic Magicwave PCI sound card(A3d)

Shavah,
Interesting post.
I have the same system as you.
I also have been thinking of upgrading my Viper TNT 550 card with the 770 ultra but after reading your post I think I will wait a while.
Thanks for the info.

Gord

I have the Diamond 770 Ultra 32 and I am rather disappointed in the card. I replaced my Dia. Fire GL 1000 Pro 8 meg/ V1 combo for this? I thought I would see great improvements but from what I can see all I get is better frame rates the picture doesn't look any better. I play EAW most and don't see much of an improvement for the nearly 150 US I forked over. Could it be I don't have it set up right? Using the InControl tools I have it clocked at the #4 setting though I don't see much difference between 1 and 5. All other settings are turned on or set somewhere in the middle. Any advice? Oh I tried the Ndvidia drivers and didn't get as good a test score so went back to the latest Diamond drivers which I hear are the same anyway.

Abit LX-6 MB
64 meg ram
