I just got a new CPU & MB and would like to purchase a new sound card as well! Could some of you guys give me a few suggestions as to what to get? I don't need anything expensive, but I do want something better than average!

Get the Sound Blaster Live X-Gamer. It does EAX positional sound and comes with the FULL versions of Need for Speed High Stakes, Thief, and, Descent3. It's around 60-70 bucks from buy.com. Also has very low CPU utilization.

Also, Comp USA has the Montego II Quad for $49 this week, Saturday is last day. If you have any favorite games that support EAX or A3D, that should be a factor in what card you buy.

You might want to check out the Diamond Monster MX300. I got mine for just over $42 from some place in WA after checking for prices and info on www.killerapp.com. It got good reviews and suits me just fine.

These guys are right. They have mentioned the only 3 sound boards you should consider, IMO. Even though I own a Montego II, and like it very much, the SBLive! has the lowest CPU utilization. All 3, the SBLive, MX300, and Montego support positional sound as Greggy_D mentioned. Can't go wrong with any of them.

If you can find one the I.O Magic brand boards are very good. I have a Magicwave PCI board in my PC that I picked up at CompUSA a few months back for $36. These cards have A3D positional audio chipset, DOS enulation that can't be beat(if you need it) and a rock steady digital gameport. CPU usage is also very miserly where these cards are concerned. I have had NO problems with it whatsoever running any game/sim and set up was a snap.
For the price it is the sound card steal of the year IMO.

Hell, you could always buy *my* soundcard so I could upgrade. It's a not-so-brand-spanking-new Soundblaster 32 (essentially an AWE32 value). It's one of those Ultra-modern (10 years ago!) ISA cards, and as a game thingy on the back.
It's been fully soak-tested (4 years and counting!) so I can probably guarantee it'll work (as long as your machine *has* ISA slots - not everyone's is modern enough for this!). I'd even blow the dust off it for no additional charge...
