3dfx did it in 1996. NVIDIA did it in 1999. This year, ATI has done it. With the RADEON 9700, ATI takes 3-D game acceleration into the stratosphere. Our Len "Viking1" Hjalmarson shows you how the RADEON 9700 is set to blow away the GeForce4 and take combat sim graphics fidelity to heights of unbelievable quality.

For me, I'll wait for the new nVidia silicon. Why? Because ATI's history of driver updates leaves a lot to be desired, IMO.

NV3x on the 0.13 micron process is a huge jump ahead of anything now, even the 9700 Pro. The nVidia card is rumoured to be more powerful than the cards at Pixar.

But ATI's card is good, no doubt about that. I know it's got the blessing of Carmack -- and so it should...the Geforce 4 was released earlier this year and that's a long time in this cut-throat industry.

But what's really good about it is that it is a contender to nVidia, which means that the consumer can only benefit from competitive prices and more bang for the buck.

As a die-hard GeForce user for many years this card really has me interested. At best Nvidia say their next card will be out next Spring, well that's many months away and how much improvement will we see? the GeForce 4 really was'nt that much of a laep over the Geforce 3 and certainly not enough to make me wantto go out and replace mine but this new ATI card might.

The way I look at it is this: what games are currently supporting the features that the 9700 has to offer? Very few I'd bet. By the time that they do, say several months down the line, a new contender is on the block with the horsepower and extra features which will leave the 9700 standing. I'm no die-hard nVidia fan, but they're pretty shrewd operators. They know they're taking a slight risk in waiting for the 0.13 micron technology: therefore they must be confident that it'll be more than worth it. Also, NV3x is the silocon where 3dfx's engineers are really going to leave their mark.
