Sometime this week Ubi Soft will release the final patch for IL-2 Sturmovik. Expect three new aircraft and additional variants of the MiG 3, for a total of ten new flyables including the Bf-109E-4, the Fw-190A-8, the Yak 1, the I-16 and the MiG 3. Our Len "Viking1" Hjalmarson gives us a hands-on, combat-tested checkride of the new aircraft and tells us what's coming next for IL-2.

After writing this I discovered that the A8 can also sport the Mk 103 30mm cannon. The difference?

Muzzle velocity on the Mk 108 is 1600 fps, on the Mk 103 it is 2800. Hitting power is nearly doubled, and the shell has a flatter trajectory.

The cannon weighs 200 pounds more.

Len- this is the kind of thing that is great but rare- official add-ons. I still maintain it should be part of most titles' strategy on the part of developers. It gives continued sales to the original title for a long time and consumers feel they got something for their money. Will most that bought IL-2 NOT buy the add-on? No. I sincerely believe it is good company strategy.

Nice preview, but three things are wrong:

1. The V1.1 upgrade will not be released this week. It is scheduled for Monday, June 10th, but that may change depending on the testing effort.

2. V1.1 will NOT be the last free upgrade prior to Forgotten Battles.

3. These are upgrades, not patches.

All you had to do was ask.

Carl

Thanks Carl! It seems to me we have seen patch/upgrade combinations here.

I sent you a note requesting an interview. Did you get it? Sounds like it would be timely since most of us have understood that this was the last update.

I'm interested in what I describe in the article as a new model in community cooperation and "upgrades." Let's talk.

In the article I describe "trimming" the I-16. It doesn't actually have trim, but in the beta update the regular trim setting impacts elevator position and therefore acts like trim. I don't know whether this will remain present in the release.

Just noted a response to Carl at another forum where he mentions that 1.2 upgrade will contain "only a few additional aircraft." He also mentions that it will feature more missions and campaigns. But.. nothing is final.
