BCT Commander is about the closest you can get to a modern high-fidelity military training simulator without needing a security pass. Interested in toe-to-toe tactical nuclear combat with OPFOR? Been waiting for the ground combat equivalent of Harpoon II? Then read on!

Nice job. The tricky thing in reviewing BCTC (I did the Games Domain review) is explaining that it's good - but not for anyone not interested in a lot of mental work, because it refuses to dumb things down for you. 8)

James,

Do you have a link handy for your Games Domain review? I'd really like to read it, but wasn't able to find it on the GD site by searching the archives. Perhaps it's too recent a review to be in their archive index?

Thanks,

Peter

They listed it in the archive as "BCT Commander", which may be why you didn't find it?

Thanks for the review - I wouldn't have really considered trying because I mainly play Panzer Elite for ground warfare. Also I read a very good book by Daniel Bolger with the extensive title "Dragons at war: Land battle in the desert" ISBN 0-8041-0899-4 which describes training at Fort Irwin. I found it helped me out somewhat with Panzer elite but more so with "Armor attacks". I imagine it would help (people like me) with BCT Commander.

Just came across this...should really be in the 'useful links' section of the review since it describes in detail every weapon system in the game:

Peter

p.s. Virtoz, I've read Bolger's book on the Light Infantry called 'Death Ground'. He certainly has a way with words! BCT is very different from PE...especially since it's modern vs WW2. If you like Steel Beasts, especially playing around on the map screen, then you'll definitely like BCT.

Bolger's "The Battle for Hunger Hill" is also well worth a read.

From what I've seen of it, Panzer Elite is very different from BCT. Panzer Elite focuses on platoon-level combat, while BCT usually hands you the eponymous Brigade Combat Team. There's no pretty 3D view, no gunnery mode.... instead, you need to work on coordinating your forces for maximum effect. It's more like playing SB *only* from the map screen.

You may well like BCT a lot nonetheless (you can download a demo of it from Shrapnel to try it out).

Whenever I play Steel Beasts I inevitably find myself playing from the map screen. Funny that.

No wonder I like BCT so much.

Thanks for the cues to the other Bpolger publications - I'll look out for them - points taken on the difference between PE and BCT. I suppose my point really was that Bolger's book got me thinking better (and wishing for a combined arms approach to PE )

I suppose I have been guilty of waiting for "Steel Beasts II 3D".

...and of not having enough time...
..and playing DOD2 too much...
...and IL-2 not enough...
...and F4...still...
