Sounds like these books would be an interesting complement to Michael Herr's 'Dispatches' in which I first read about LRRPs. According to Herr, they were strange animals, but I suppose you'd have to be in that sort of business.

"Didja ever notice that guy who pulls out right in front of you, then slows down to 30? Then whenever you get to a passing zone, he speeds up... Then the double solids return, and he's back to 30. And keeps his left turn signal on the whole time? Hitler was much worse than that guy" -- overheard on plastic.com

Brought back some weird memories for me. I remember listening post missions when 2 of us would stake out a trail or whatnot for up to 2 weeks and report traffic. Very adrenilin making when gooks would go by 6 feet away from you. Marines had 1911s issued that I never saw many Army guys with. They were good savers for close in.

The M-16 firing rate has always been faked in movies. Most of the time you fired semi-auto. Even on full you snapped off 3-round bursts usually. Saw it depicted correctly in only one cheap flick. All others show people firing full clip bursts. These movie heros woulda been outta ammo in the first 3 minutes of a fire fight!

Twitch,

I didn't know you were a Vietnam Vet. Would love to hear some of your stories sometime.

Yeah, the LRRPs in the book did indeed have a few times when they got close but remained undetected. It sounded like a tough job.
