In February we ran Viking1's excellent air-to-air gunnery training series for IL-2 Sturmovik. Predictably, readers then asked for an air-to-ground tactics piece. Our Aaron "Spectre" Watson answers the call with this mud moving article and a downloadable training track file.

Nice summary of A2G ops, Spec! Interesting point about the dreaded 'second pass'. I know this'll pretty much get you keeled in jet sims like EF2000 or Falcon4, but I always wondered if that held true for the prop sims. Guess we'll have to play a lot more A2G missions to gather this data.

This is perfect.

Just created a New Campaign in Quick Gen and my first mission?....Mud Moving in the IL-2. and I'm struggling, so this is perfect timing.

"In the only off-line campaign I have completed"

You finished a campaign?

Just read it. I was about to say that I would have liked to have seen screenshots of angle of attack etc...then I the perfect sollution that makes IL-2 a WINNER! Track files

Sigh. You make it look so easy! I'm always going in way to low and a lot steeper than that. Something else to practice on.

Good work Speccie

Will take a look at the track file when I'm @ home but I'm wondering at what height you start your attack runs.

Also some advice on how to hit anything with bombs will be appreciated (yep I'm to lazy to study on that all by my self). Did an airfield attack in a 190 last night. The bombcrater wasn't even near the target area. Got my revenge with the onboard weaponry untill I ploughed the field (damned target fixation).

Thank you, Gentlemen,

For the kind words.

Z, you're correct in the one pass theory with Jets. In IL-2 it's more of a diluted
factor. On your 1st pass, your wingmen are usually still in the area, and keep some of
the lead from firing at you. On 2nd pass, they're usually spread and you get more shot
at you. The net result is, however, similar.

Bilkers, you nailed it, practice. Like so many things in real life, to get good, you
have to do it a bunch. In IL-2, staying with one weapon's platform is best. Especially
with the great variance of FM's. You need to know how your aircraft handles well.

boshar, see the above! As mentioned in the article, a generic approach to all planes
is tough. I'd set up some missions with no opposition, run through them, and check the
track file. Excellent learning tool that it is.

And thank you, mane_raptor, for critiquing the training track before I sent it in. It's
much better with your suggestions...

Thanks, Spec, always a pleasure.....

But no where in the article did I see the "Rules of Mud Moving".

I kinda liked the first one:

"Mud is moved with youre ordinance, not your plane."
