Thanks for the nice article Len. I installed one of these cards in my new PC a few months ago and have not found time to even mess with it yet. I would be interested to know how IL2 performs on your PC with this card. I am hoping that the demo is the culprit in my case. I seem to have a lot of bleedover and really not that great overall sound with IL2. Although the sound does seem to work good with other applications.

One question Len,
Does this card have a separate plug-in for my headset, or am I still going to have to crawl under my desk, and unplug my front speakers to use my headset as I do with my SB Live!?
I would trade all the environmental presets in the world if I didn't have to crawl under my desk every time I didn't want to disturb someone in the next room.

Flybri,

The Card has five jacks and a joystick/midi port.

1 jack) Digital out jack (Dat,minidisc recorder, or four point surround digital speakers)

2 jack) Line in Jack (Digital audio tape, cassette, minidisc player for playback or recording)

3 jack) microphone jack

4 jack) line out jack (connects to powered speakers or amp for audio output. Also supports headphones)

5 jack) rear out jack (connects to powered speakers or amp for audio output)

There is a set up screen for the card where you can change what speakers you are using. Whether it be two or four speakers, or headphones. Finally tried it last nite after reading the article. Works real well. Even has a test button and sends sound to each individual speaker or headphone to be sure it is set up correctly.

Thanks BB,
I think I've got "she who must be obeyed" talked into a new system, so I'll be in the market for a new sound card soon. That is unless I get a mb with built-in sound. I think I'll pass on the O'possum, though...
By the way, it is a nice article, Len, thanx.

The demo does have some sound issues so don't use it to judge the compatability of sound hardware.

The LIVE! is a great board overall and prices are now falling with the AUDIGY released. If you have the extra bucks go for the AUDIGY, review on the way

Viking1 ends his look at Creative's X-Gamer 5.1 sound board in Part II of this series. Today he answers two burning question simmers need to know: which reproduces 3D sound better, EAX or A3D; and, can today's leading-edge sound technology really give simmers the competitive edge? As well, he looks at the card's user interface, audio management capabilities and the included game bundle.

Hi Len and all others.

I've been around the www.soundblaster.com page and can't find anything about the Creative SB Live! X-Gamer 5.1.

So could anyone share some info where to buy etc. Im living in Denmark (Europe).

Mark,

CLICK HERE for Creative's order page for the X-Gamer 5.1. Only one problem, it's already out of stock.

CLICK HERE for Creative online in Denmark. They don't list the X-Gamer 5.1 at all, but they have several other 5.1-type boards.

Len, if you read this, do you know if any of the other 5.1 boards by Creative are comparable to the X-Gamer? And why, btw, would they be out of stock on such a relatively recent product?
