GeForce2 or 3? KYRO II? Who knows? Len "Ecclesiasticus" Hjalmarson gets biblically poetic with his teachings today as he helps us make sense of today's current crop of high-powered video card technology.

Great subject,

Looking forward to a comparisson between a G-force 2 MX 400 and the Kyro II as they seem to be the best options for my budget.

I'm curious if you found a way to get a consistent benchmark from a SIM (fraps and a demo mode perhaps?). I would like to see the FPS performance of different sims with these cards.

If the Kyro II trick works in sims it could be the best card ever. A game like Panzer Elite has o lot of hidden polygons and if the card just renders the vissible ones it wil do wonders performance wise.

I'm also curios if the Geforce 3 has any advantages over the Gforce2. The graphics engine in most flight sims is based on the old DirectX 7 api the Gforce 3 seems to perform little better than the 2 in these kind of games but thats all in the Quake and race games world I hope that we finaly get a good flightsim benchmark for these cards.

Can't wait for Part II:More on KYRO II and GeForce 3! I checked out the Hercules site and they are selling the new "Hercules 3D Prophet 4000XT" for only $79.95! If this card does what they say it does then I am going to order one ASAP! I am using a Diamond TNT2 Value card now. Does the KYRO II work well with either Athlon or Intel PIII or P4? Thanks in advance!

The GF3 is slightly faster (2fps) than GF2 in CFS2, and much slower than GF2 in FS2000 (5fps).

But with the ULTRA it's another story. GF2 Ultra beats GF3 in both sims. Until games support DX8, its not a bargain.

Yep, but there have been driver issues so buy the board where you can return it in case it doesn't work well with your sim of choice.

btw, the XT version not only has less memory but is clocked slower so performance is not as good as GF2.

Good article in this part. When I was recently shopping for my new system and was considering the vid card nVidia just stood out above the rest. I ended up with the 64MB GeForce 2 Ultra and have not been disappointed. Curiously web site with specs don't all tell the same details. ATI, for example, didn't list the same for same info leaving me with a void. I'm certain the current technology in all cards is RELATIVELY similar but the comparison of performance from the manufacturers who had similar yardsticks listed put me on the nVidia route. It's tuff cause any new card will perform well and certain things aren't apparent- we'd all say they're much better than our old card. But certainly there are instances where the horsepower will show itself.
I had a 32MB Revolution IV card which did well for years and I got it when everyone else had 16MB, but I found CPU and RAM power was not made up for in later games/sims.

I'm looking forward to your next segment.
