Hands on with the release version of Rage Software's Eurofighter Typhoon. Will it be a worthy successor to Total Air War? Join Len "Viking1" Hjalmarson as he gives you his first impressions of this sim's interface, cockpit, wingmen, and comms.

Wow...finally we're getting some honest-to-god meat about EF:Typhoon. Looking very much forward to the next instalments.

So far, Len, I can live with everything that you say is missing from Typhoon relative to TAW. From what your saying, the Wingman AI seems competent. I'll be very interested to hear what you have to say about the campaign engine. Perhaps that's when pilot management/wingman interaction will really show its colours.

And keeps his left turn signal on the whole time? Hitler was much worse than that guy" -- overheard on plastic.com

Yeh, I realize a lot of this comes down to taste I'm just getting into the campaign, flew four more missions on the weekend and will fly at least that many today. Watch for part II tomorrow and the campaign report by Friday.

Len,

I'm also on the way to write a review and agree with your findings so far. Wingman does not always do what he's asked for. In a 2 vs 3 dogfight he was asked to help with the attack targets command. Instead of going guns he flew out for approx 10 NM, just to fire what he thought his best weapon was. His ASRAAM nearly hit myself

I'm having a hard time to figure out what the Radar does, as you're never informed about the source of a contact (Radar, IRST, Datalink ???). Also when does this thing padlock what ?
Are you using a GeForce ? If so, what driver are you using ? I have serious clipping errors in outside view and couldn't sort this out with changing drivers yet.
Anyway, I'll follow your findings with interest !

Gee, it sounds to me that the wingman controls, and therefore the wingman AI, is not that intuitive. Darn. I hope they sort that problem out before the game is released. I probably wouldn't buy this game based on Len's description in this article. A crying shame.

Mike

It's a safe bet that much of the AI from TAW has been imported.. both good and bad.

Targeting is really a pain. More on this in part 2. But as you've noticed, the manual doesn't tell you what T key really does. T is filtered by onboard EF2 computer to target the highest threat.

Unfortunately, logic doesn't always follow.

The good news is that on my refly of the mission (3 times) the strike flight did indeed engage. I don't know with what weapon.. it wasn't Brimstone. But anyway, they did engage.
